Stephanie Zimbalist, the wife of actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr. and mother
to actress Stephanie Zimbalist, has died. She was 73.
She died Monday at home in Solvang, Calif., after a long battle with
lung cancer, said husband Efrem, best known for his roles in the
television series "77 Sunset Strip" and "The F.B.I."
The couple had one child, actress Stephanie Zimbalist, who starred as
Laura Holt in the 1980s television show "Remington Steele."
Efrem Zimbalist described his wife of 51 years as extremely shy and
quiet with people, but someone who communicated easily with animals.
At one time or another, the family owned everything from apes to lamas
to deer, as well as a collection of farm animals.
"She loved deer and she was in many ways like a deer," he said.
Her affection for animals also surfaced in her artistic pursuits,
which were many. She sculpted in clay and bronze and created elaborate
animal-themed tapestries and needlepoint pillow covers.
"She did animals almost exclusively in needlepoint," he said.
"Roosters and cows. Her work was very colorful."
The two met on a blind date in New York. An avid horsewoman, Stephanie
had a premonition she would be thrown from her horse the next day.
"I bet her 50 cents she wouldn't," he said. "I think I won and had to
go back and collect and we went from there."
In addition to her husband and daughter, survivors include two
stepchildren, Nancy and Efrem III and four stepgrandchildren,
Kristina, Effren IV, Alexis and McNair.

good point! I really should have capitalized "WIFE OF"
I thought you did fine, waz. I was startled, too, but it wasn't your
fault. You had her age and "wife of" right next to her name.
But, yeah, it gimme a start. Not your fault, though.
What lovely words from her husband.

You know, as a joke I used to always refer to the daughter as
"Stephanie Zimbalist, Jr."
Now I know that she actually WAS a "junior."

Same here, but I knew the actress couldn't be 73. When I saw "wife of
Efrem" it was clear, this was the actresses mother. I think you did
fine, it's the best you could do since both mother and daughter had the
same name.

Actually, Efrem IV had his wedding announcement in the Sunday New York
Times a few months ago - I forget what his profession was...

From 19 August 2006: "Mr. Zimbalist, 34, is the founder and the general
partner in Zimbalist Global Macro Fund, a hedge fund in New York that
invests primarily in global futures."
Whatever the hell that means, that's what he does.

In a newsgroup widely known for its bad puns, that was the
baddest.

Wow. A real zinger.
