Sidney Woloshin, a jingle writer whose greatest fame was authoring the
"You Deserve a Break Today" McDonald's commercials, has died of pneumonia.
He was 72.

Woloshin's firm reworked the jingle for a hundred McDonald's
commercials. Last year Advertising Age magazine named it as the top
jingle of the century.

Not that I'm real proud of knowing this, but didn't Barry Manilow write that
jingle?

No, Manilow just sang it, he didn't write it.
The music was by Sid Woloshin & Kevin Gavin, the lyrics by Keith
Reinhard, Richard Hazlett & Ed Farran.

I stand corrected then, I used to tell people that Manilow wrote that as
well as "Get a bucket o chicken, get a barrel of fun goodbye ho hum" as
well as "drink Dr.Pepper, the joy of ev'ry boy and girl, it's the most
original soft drink ever in the whole wide world." i'm getting carried
away but I guess he just sang those too.

Not sure who did the chicken one you cite, but the Dr Pepper one was
written in 1974 by Randy Newman (yes, *the* Randy Newman) with
additional lyrics by Jake Holmes (1970 one-hit wonder with "So Close").
Manilow did write the music for "like a good neighbour, State Farm is
there", to lyrics by Jerry Gavin & Keith Reinhard.

Yes, and you can find it on his 1977 "Live" album.
It's called "A Very Strange Medley (V.S.M.)", and consists of
excerpts of commercials for (in order) Kentucky Fried Chicken,
State Farm, Stridex, Band-Aid, a toilet bowl cleaner [can't make
out the name], Dr Pepper, Pepsi and McDonalds.
