Allen Mitchell, a former quarterback for one of University of South
Carolina's greatest teams, died over the weekend.
“We can confirm that his death was a suicide,” Lexington County chief
deputy coroner Randy Martin said Monday.
The coroner’s office did not release details Monday of how Mitchell
died, except to say his death took place in a residence.
Mitchell, who was 48, is survived by his wife and two children.
He first rose to prominence as an outstanding baseball and football
player at Batesburg-Leesville High School before earning varsity
football letters at USC from 1983 to 1985.
Mitchell was a member of the Gamecocks’ vaunted “Black Magic” team
that held the school record for wins (10) until last season’s squad
won 11 games and eclipsed the mark.
Mitchell and Mike Hold proved that a two-quarterback system can work
during the Gamecocks' celebrated season in 1984.
Mitchell and Hold helped lead coach Joe Morrison's team to the first
10-win season in USC history. The 10 wins for the team — which ranked
No. 2 nationally — included victories over such powers as Notre Dame,
Georgia, Pittsburgh, Florida State, Clemson.
The team also was known for its the Fire Ants defense swarming to the
football in garnet jerseys; Morrison pacing the sidelines in his solid
black outfit, including sunglasses, and thousands of fans in Williams-
Brice Stadium similarly dressed.
Over a three-year career Mitchell wore the No. 11 jersey in 34 games
for USC, completing 49 percent of his passes and throwing for over
2,200 yards.
