Michael Wayne, Son of Actor John Wayne, Dies at 68

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Wayne, oldest son of legendary actor John
Wayne who collaborated with his father in producing such films as "The Green
Berets" and "The Train Robbers," has died, a family spokesman said. He was
68.

Michael Wayne died of heart failure on Wednesday afternoon following
complications from lupus at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in the Los
Angeles suburb of Burbank, the spokesman added.

Since John Wayne's death from lung cancer in 1979, Michael Wayne has been
active in controlling and distributing his work and image. He was also
chairman of the board of the John Wayne Foundation and the John Wayne Cancer
Institute.

Michael Wayne told the Los Angeles Times in 1985 that his father was "a hero
to his family" for his honesty, integrity and loyalty, qualities that he
carried into his film roles.

"Whether on-screen or off, he was a man who lived by a code," Michael Wayne
told the paper.

"I think people respected him because he was honest and stood for
something," he said. "He believed in America and he was outspoken about it,
even when it was unpopular."

Michael Wayne was born and raised in Los Angeles and earned a business
degree before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, where he rose to the rank of
staff sergeant.

In the 1960s he began collaborating with his father on his films, first
serving as producer on the 1963 western "McLintock!"

About fifteen years ago I recall reading an interview with one of John Wayne's
sons describing his battle with breast cancer (yes, it's possible; Shaft actor
Richard Roundtree had it too.) Was this the same son?

From this site: http://www.skyecom.net/jwayne/biography.shtml Here are
John Wayne's children:
Michael Wayne. Born November 23, 1934.
Toni Wayne. Born 1936 / Died Dec. 2000
Patrick Wayne. Born July 15, 1939.
Melinda Wayne. Born 1940.
Aissa Wayne. Born 1956.
John Ethan Wayne. Born 1962.
Marisa Wayne. Born 1966.

The page wasn't updated to include Michael Wayne's death.

The son I remembered best (probably because he appeared in so many of
his father's and other's movies) is Patrick.

Thanks. I wonder if his mother was any relation to the "Spanish land
grant" Saenz family of coastal Santa Monica Bay? (eg: Washing Redskins
pro, the late Eddie Saenz, etc)

since Michael was instrumental in NOT releasing The High and the Mighty, and
other films of the duke's, we might say he was active in NOT distributing
his work.
He had an odd streak of being celluloid-retentive. ; - )

I should have said: Eddie Saenz, USC football star, Washington
Redskins' fullback Halfback (1946-1951)... and Tyrone Power's stunt
double.

I can't say if she was related to that particular Saenz lineage or not, Bob.
IIRC, Wayne was always more attracted to women of Hispanic and Latin
American decent, for I know two of his three wives were Latin American. On a
side note, Bob, Wayne also joined the Fraternity in Arizona, around 1970 or
so. Wayne is normally included in the lists of those that are/were "Famous"
when that topic is brought up.

I remember Patrick, mostly, as James Butler Bonham in "The
Alamo." Michael Wayne was an associate producer for that
film.

I could never understand why the Wayne family has sat on that movie for all
these years; don't they think it wouldn't sell a gazillion DVD's if they put it
out. It's never been released on VHS (and is surely the biggest American
feature film which was never released to VHS or DVD), and never plays on TV; I
saw it once over twenty years ago when HBO played it one month. Even on late
night TV before the days of infomercials, they would never play this movie.
It is hoped that this movie may finally see the light of day.

Patrick was in a few of Duke's films, most notably Big Jake. He was also the
cowboy in the old Marathon candy bar commercials.

John Ethan Wayne was the kidnapped grandchild in Big Jake.

Ordinarily I would say not a chance, but being the son of the Duke has to
rate him a better than 50/50 chance of being included.

And Michael produced Big Jake, which I believe makes it the only movie where
John Wayne worked with all three sons.

The videos are being advertised as "The NBC Years," which is really
kind of sad (and inaccurate, too), since Red was on NBC only during
1951-53 (which isn't in the collection) and the 1970-71 season,
following the cancellation of his show on CBS. Those later shows are
the ones they've collected (along with some HBO specials). I wonder if
Red's CBS tapes even exist anymore.

I spoke to Michael on at least three occasions about the Batjac films (which
include the John Wayne pictures THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY and ISLAND IN THE
SKY, as well as the Budd Boetticher/Randolph Scott classic SEVEN MEN FROM
NOW). He said that Batjac fully intended to release the films once
technical problems with restoring them were overcome. At least that was the
case with ISLAND and SEVEN MEN, which he told me were in really bad shape
and needed extensive work. (SEVEN MEN has obviously seen that work, as it
was screened in a restored version a year or two ago in L.A.) My
recollection is, though, that THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY was being delayed more
for marketing reasons, i.e., they had very slowly (and quite remuneratively)
released other Batjac films like HONDO and McLINTOCK!, and had plans to
continue the slow-release process. But it's been nine years since I last
spoke to Michael, and that seems to indicate something other than a
slow-release program. I can't imagine what it is, but there might be some
clue in the fact that THATM and ISLAND IN THE SKY are both based on books by
Ernest K. Gann. Perhaps there's a legal issue. (Of course, both films are
directed by William A. Wellman, but it's less likely there's a legal issue
involving workers on the film itself, as it's rare that even a film's
director has a contract that gives him any hold on the marketing of the
film, at least back then, for a studio film.)

There's an interesting but ultimately unhelpful article on the subject in
the August 2002 issue of Forbes Magazine. Here's the link:
http://www.forbes.com/2002/08/16/0816wayne_print.html

At any rate, after a respectful delay, it might be good to start hitting
Batjac's offices again with requests for information. Batjac's address is:

Batjac Productions Inc.
9595 Wilshire Blvd.
Beverly Hills, CA 90212

His older shows from the 50s are apparently public domain and are easily found
on DVD. I have a set of them and the quality of the kinescopes is actually
quite good.

The 1970-71 season of NBC shows was actually his weakest period. I also would
love the see the CBS episodes from the 1960s made available.
