Of course, they didn't have antibiotics back then, but in that case, why haven't we heard a lot MORE stories like this from the pre-WWII era? (Meaning, sepsis that results from a mere BLISTER?)

The death of the Coolidge's son devastated them. Cal took to sleeping 15 hours a day after his son died. His son's death motivated Cal not to take a second term in his own right in 1928.
