They're airing "The Best Of Stern" this morning and they played a segment when
Howard called Sammy Davis Jr. at his hotel. I'm pretty sure it was legit. As
it happens, Howard caught Sammy in the bathtub. He actually got out of the tub
to talk to Howard, and during the course of conversation, Sammy said something
like "What if I catch pneumonia and die from this"? Howard replied, "That
would be O.K." Did anyone else hear this? I wonder when this show originally
aired. Howard said he'd been on the air for ten years. Sammy was on tour with
Frank Sinatra and Liza Minelli at the time. How soon after this did Sammy
Davis Jr. die? Did he actually die of pnuemonia? I know I sound like a moron,
but I'm serious. Did I miss something?

He died of cancer in May 1990, the same day as Jim Henson died. That tour you
refer to took place between 1988 and 1989.

Sammy was on tour with Frank and Liza in 1988 or 1989, around the time
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA opened (Sammy was talking about singing it). I'd
gather the bit was from early 1989. Not long after that he was diagnosed
with throat cancer. He died in mid-May 1990, the same day as Jim Henson.
And don't forget that Howard did a wicked parody of the dying Sammy, "The
Cancer Man."
