Bert Remsen, prolific character actro, has died at age 74. He died Thursday
of natural causes in his sleep in L.A. He was best known for working in
Robert Altman movies, such as Nashville, perhaps best known as T-Dub in"
Thieves Like Us." He is one of those people that if you saw his face you
would know him instantly. Deano

Usually play a bad guy in westerns in his earlier years, then mostly wise
grandfathers lately. He was a really nice guy. A gentleman and a gentle man.

One of my favorite character actors...I always enjoyed seeing him turn up
(usually unexpectedly, since he was seldom listed in a movie's opening
credits). I remember my delighted surprise at seeing him appear as a
hamburger-stand owner in "White Man's Burden," just to name one of his more
recent roles.

From AP:

Bert Remsen

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Bert Remsen, an actor whose long list of movie credits
included ``Pork Chop Hill'' and the current ``Forces of Nature,'' died Thursday
of heart failure. He was 74.

He thought he was finished in show business in 1964 when an 84-foot crane
toppled on the television set of ``No Time for Sergeants'' and broke his back.
He then decided to become a casting director.

Remsen was casting the part of a psychotic cop in the film ``Brewster McCloud''
in 1970 when director Robert Altman suddenly looked at him and said, ``You.''

He later worked in other Altman films, including ``McCabe & Mrs. Miller,''
``California Split,'' ``Nashville'' and ``Thieves Like Us,'' and he soon
abandoned the casting business.

Other credits included ``A Wedding,'' ``Fast Break,'' ``The Sting II,''
``Places in the Heart,'' ``Miss Firecracker,'' ``Dick Tracy,'' ``Only the
Lonely,'' ``The Bodyguard,'' ``The Player'' and ``Maverick.''

He was also known for his TV work: ``Gibbsville,'' ``The Adventures of Brisco
County, Jr.,'' ``Melrose Place'' and the TV movies ``Lansky,'' ``Crime of the
Century'' and ``Road Ends.''

This is really depressing. Bert was a friend of mine for the last seven or
eight years, a really wonderful guy who had the most incredible stories to
tell, not only of being an actor, but of growing up. His father was a cop,
and Bert's tales of his father's adventures would curl your hair, not so
much for the action as for the depravity his father witnessed. He was a
sweet guy. I only learned of his death last night and I'm still a bit in
shock.

I have a device for making screen captures, and I have three of Remsen's Robert
Altman movies ("Thieves Like Us," "Buffalo Bill and the Indians," and "A
Wedding") on video. It shouldn't be any problem for me to make a still of
Remsen from these tapes. (I could also rent one of his more recent
appearances, but these are the ones I have handy.) If anyone is interested,
please e-mail me, and I can send you a picture attached (as a .jpg file) to an
e-mail.

Jim: I have been a fan of Bert Remsen for years and would be interested in
learning the pending funeral arrangements. If you, as his friend, hear
where and when he is to be buried and the funeral is not private, please
post the details or email me a plan...@ix.netcom.com.

Thank you.

Bob

By the way, here is an address for those who might want to see a picture of

The word I have is that funeral services will be private, but that Barbara
and the family will hold an old-fashioned Irish wake at some date to be
announced soon. Unfortunately I'm leaving Saturday for a month in Europe,
so will probably miss not only the wake but the announcement thereof.

OK, So I'm losing my mind. I thought Bert Remsen was the guy who played
"Gus, the fireman" on "Leave It To Beaver". If so he would be over a
hundred now. So who was the guy who played "Gus" on "Leave It To
Beaver"?
Thanks.

I'm sure anyone who sees his pic will instantly remember him. Oddly,
last night I was unable to picture him, but read the IMDb info Desscribe
posted here; in the middle of the night I woke up and had a clear image
of him as a bartender in a small role on The Dick Van Dyke Show (sorry to
go off on such a tangent; I guess it just struck me as odd).
Bert had a distinctive look and great timing for comedy. He will be
missed.

Addendum to Bert's obit: I just learned that Bert -- get this -- donated
his skull to the Goodman Theatre in Chicago for use as Yorick's skull in

Now that's an actor.

That was Burt Mustin, who died on January 28, 1977, about a week short of
his 93rd birthday.

One of the last episodes of LEAVE IT TO BEAVER (which ended its run in 1963)
gives a strong hint that Gus the Fireman died sometime during the course of
the show. However, Gus was back in the cast for occasional appearances in a
sequel series, STILL THE BEAVER (later THE NEW LEAVE IT TO BEAVER), although
he was played by another, somewhat younger actor (i.e., 70ish instead of
90ish).
