For those who inquired or speculated about the murder of teen actress
Stephanie Gorman in the '60s:
Crime novelist James Ellroy ("L.A. Confidential," "The Cold Six
Thousand") said yesterday at a booksigning in San Francisco that he's
writing a journalistic piece for GQ magazine about the unsolved
killing, to be published in the next few months.
(Anyone unfamiliar with Ellroy's approach should check out the
unsolved-murder pieces in his nonfiction collection "Crime Wave.")

I just watched Stephanie Gorman (Annette)
in the Leave it to beaver episode she was in.

She was very stunning for a teenager and you could tell she had a future in
acting.

Until the post a few weeks ago I never knew she was murdered.

Thanks very much for the Heads Up on this!

I was doing some Leave It To Beaver research for a project on the old TV shows,
and was trying to locate the eventual whereabouts of the supporting players,
including those who were memorable for only one show (Miss Gorman). I read
that she died in 1965, and the cause of death was murder. I found someone
online who knew her in school and had written a piece on her murder. I read
this, and contacted the writer, who returned my email with more info. Then I
posted what I knew in here.

Stephanie Gorman was very pretty, and also had that certain charisma that was
evident even in this small role. The only other part I know she had was as
part of the chorus in Bye Bye Birdie.

I wonder if the writer of the GQ piece will contact Jerry Mathers, Vernoica
Cartwright, or Stephen Talbott, all of whom worked with Stephanie in this
episode. In any case, it will be an interesting read.

Thanks for letting us know.

Does anyone know how to contact Ellroy? I would be happy to give him any of
the info that I have on this murder, as well as the contacts I made. It might
be of some help to his story.

Since he was at a book signing in SF, maybe give a call/email to one of the
local papers and offer a contact point.

He claims to not own a computer, let alone email. Try his publisher.

Stephanie Gorman's episode ("Beaver's Autobiography," #208) ought to be
coming up on TV Land soon. It was originally shown on 20 December
1962, and TV Land is presently showing episodes from earlier that year.
TV Land runs through about 14 eps per week, so "Autobiography" ought to
come up around 15 July.

I have a TiVo sniffer on it and will post when it comes up on the
schedule.

I knew Stefanie Gorman. I lived about 3 blocks away, went to school with her and we were friends. She was the kindest girl you would ever meet. I was shy then and she went out of her way to get to know me and then include me in activities. That summer we were all in summer school (at Hami) and afterwards were scheduled to go on Wagon Trails- a program run by teachers that took teen around the country. Our tour was going to be 3 weeks long and cover the western US. She would have been the person I knew best on the tour. One morning in summer school the principal came into our classroom and announced that Stephie had been found dead. We were not told any details except it appeared she let the person into the house- they must have known each other. Then she was attacked and killed. We didn't know about 3 bullet wounds, we assumed she had been raped. Yes- I would talk with the police and suggest they speak with some of her other friends. We thought maybe she had a secret boyfriend. Maybe- THE FINGERPRINT was from the killer- the "stranger" who ran to help her older sister. Stephanie would never have opened the door for a stranger. And it had not been broken open. So how else did the killer ge in the house??? The police can contact me and I urge other Keoloans to comment

For many years, there have been rumors that Stephanie had a mentally unstable uncle. As the story goes, after the murder, the family had (for other reasons) the uncle institutionalized for the rest of his life. Not wanting the family dragged through a mess of proceeding with criminal charges against the Uncle, the elders of the family discreetly took care of the problem.

Whether this is true or partly true is/was known only to the elders of the Gorman family.

Stephanie and Annette are/were not the same person. Annette was born in 1947 and is still alive. Stephanie was born in 1949.

I too was in summer school at Hami and I didn't know her well. Like you, I was very shy. She was always nice. Her murder was so sad and even 50+ years later, I still remember.
