CLARENCE, Iowa -- Tonight investigators want to know what sparked a
fire that destroyed much of a Cedar County hog confinement facility
including several hundred animals. Flames broke out about 11:45 this
morning on Ocean Avenue just south and west of Clarence, Iowa.
Crews from at least 8 departments in Cedar, Clinton and Scott counties
rushed to help. You could see smoke from the massive blaze nearly 50
miles away on the north side of Davenport.
Quad Cities Newschannel Eight's Chris Williams shows us what it was
like as firefighters and neighbors tried to help.
From a distance you could see and hear what was going on at the hog
confinement facility. Smoke and flames ripped into the cool, clear,
midday air. Lowden Fire Chief Joe Wenndt says, "You could see the
flames from Lowden and I knew it was a big one."
People from miles around followed the flames, smoke and roar to see
for themselves. When they got here, some found it hard to believe
firefighters would ever snuff out the fierce flames and towering
column of black smoke.
"It's hart to imagine a tanker load of water will go far in a fire
like that.", said witness Terry Kroemer.
You can hear the roar of the gas burning from L.P. tanks, and that was
a big concern for firefighters. Flames began to shoot from the tanks
as they burst in the heat. Clarence Fire Chief Randy Burken described
it, "Just like a loud whistle. You know what's going on."
Lowden Chief Wenndt said, "We hit it with everything we had."
That included Farmers and Construction Workers who dropped everything
to help save what they could, and manpower from at least 8 surrounding
fire departments. A convoy of tankers kept the dust from settling on
this typically quiet country road. But as firefighters got the upper
hand, embers gently returned to earth, and the reality of what had
happened came crawling back into view.
Penny Kapinski stopped to see if she could help one of her neighbor's
hogs saying, " I was going to put him in one of our buildings, but
he's burned pretty bad."
While firefighters saved several hundred sows, many did not escape the
burning buildings. Neighbors like Kapinski tried to corral those that
ran from the flames into nearby fields, but their injuries were too
severe. "We've been asked to put him down." said Kapinski.
What happens next for the farmer and his surviving hogs is unclear,
but one thing is certain. Without the help of these volunteers and
caring neighbors, he would have even less to move forward with.
It's estimated 1,100 hogs lived on that farm and about 700 to 800 died
in the fire. Tonight firefighters are watching hot-spots and the Fire
Marshall is looking into a cause.
