It was a tragic start to what has been dubbed the greatest show in the
Peace. At approximately 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, long-time Chuckwagon
driver Herman Flad and 14 of his 15 horses were killed in a horrific
collision south of Rycroft.
The 69-year old was headed to the Battle of the North in Dawson Creek
from the WPCA Dodge Pro Tour Championship in Strathmore, when it
appears a pickup truck crossed the centre line, causing a head on
collision.
Family watched as emergency crews worked well into the evening trying
to recover the body, which had been pinned under the truck at the
bottom of a ravine. Miraculously, one horse survived the crash
suffering just cuts and bruises.
Just a day after the tragic loss, his son Troy has made the difficult
decision to do what his father would have wanted and compete at the
exhibition.
The start of the exhibition is usually an exciting time for racers,
but this year, the mood is somewhat more somber. Ironically, the
family confirms that after 37 years, this was to be Flad's final year
before retiring. And despite the horror of the accident scene, they
are taking solace in the fact that he died doing what he loved.
With the reins now passing to the next generation, Troy can only hope
he'll be able to fill his father's boots.
Herman is survived by his wife Jean, three children - fellow
Chuckwagon drivers Troy, Darcy and Shelly as well as 9 grandchildren.

that they understand who he actually is.

As for "other" obits newsgroups the group at http://www.voy.com/60649/
has a better selection of obits than anywhere else on the 'net,
including here. There was little sense in reinventing the wheel, once
I saw that. However, a simple-minded person like yourself who never
takes a risk wouldn't have the balls to start another group, nor would
they willingly admit that something that was already established was
better. Right?
The inability to do anything other than complain is one of those
traits that you have in common with Cmelak, and that's why he's almost
60 years old and never accomplished anything in his life. Sort of
like you, right? You are, after all, sort of the literary equivalent

I thought a chuck wagon was a kind of meals on wheels mobile kitchen used to
feed people working with clocks and herds.
I can picture a chuck wagon being drawn by two or 4 horses, but 16?
That reminds me ... saw one of those "honeysucker" septic tank emptier trucks
the other day, and painted on the side was "Yesterday's meals on wheels".

Chuckwagon races are a sport common at Canadian rodeos. There's a
chuckwagon and four outriders: eight horses. It began at the Calgary
Stampede in 1923: during the Stampede today, the chuckwagon races are
televised live and regularly get more local viewers than the Academy
Awards, the Grey Cup, or the Super Bowl. Some years they beat all
three combined.
Not as many as the Stanley Cup finals, but you know what they say:

Having lived for a few years myself in Calgary, I can testify to what

Calgary Stampede, but they got a little too graphic for me when I witnessed
a major tumble in which the cowboy got badly hurt and one of his horses so

Four or five years ago was his most prolific year for transmitting
on-topic obituary-type content.
Out of about 2,000 total messages which he posted into this newsgroup,
just 12 of them were fully obit-type and on-topic.
Initiating an average of one on-topic message per month for a whole
year must have been a terrific burden on him.
