BATON ROUGE - An LSU student died after drinking an entire bottle of rum in
his off-campus apartment, Baton Rouge police said.
Corey James Domingue, 19, of Franklin died about 5 a.m. Friday at Our Lady
of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Cpl. Don Kelly said.
He said Domingue drank the fifth of rum in front of friends who had come to
his apartment Thursday night to study for a test.
Domingue said he felt sick and went to the bathroom to throw up about 12:30
a.m., and friends later found him asleep there, Kelly said. At 4:30 a.m.,
one went into the bathroom, saw that he was having trouble breathing, and
called 911.
Kelly said he does not expect any charges to be brought.
"There's nothing to indicate anyone there did anything wrong or illegal," he
said. "It doesn't involve a bar. It doesn't involve a fraternity. It's just
a kid who drank until he died. There's no evidence of foul play or
negligence. Just a bunch of kids drinking."
LSU spokesman Gene Sands said Monday that he hadn't heard that the death had
been confirmed as alcohol-related because city police, not LSU Police, were
handling the case.
"We are indeed saddened by this event, and our prayers and thoughts go out
to his family," he said.

No, I'm guessing his last words were "yo ho ho."
Heh heh, I think "WATCH THIS!" is redneck protocol whenever trying to set a
record for anything. This guy was clocked at (BAC) 0.43, nowhere near the
frat boy who achieved a 0.588 back in 1997. Same result though.

LSU warns again of alcohol
Student died Friday after binge drinking

Four days after a Louisiana State University student drank himself to death,
and one day after his family held his funeral in Franklin, university
officials issued a written statement reminding students about the dangers of
excessive drinking.
It came in response to the death of Corey James Domingue, a chemical
engineering sophomore who died early Friday after drinking a bottle of rum
in his off-campus apartment. Domingue, 19, was pronounced dead at Our Lady
of the Lake Hospital about 5 a.m., hours after he began drinking with
friends in his apartment on 1221 Bob Pettit Blvd.
His blood-alcohol content was .43, more than five times the legal limit for
adults and far more than the body can handle, said Don Moreau, chief of
operations at the East Baton Rouge Parish coroner's office. .
"At .40, you're supposed to be dead," Moreau said, but cautioned that the
official cause of death has not yet been determined. But he said it would
almost surely be deemed to be alcohol poisoning, something the university
also was taking into consideration Tuesday when LSU officials publicly
addressed the death for the first time.
"This is absolutely devastating and horrific for the university to have to
witness and observe the death of one of its students. That's part of our
family," said Nancy Mathews, executive director of LSU's Campus Community
Coalition for Change, which seeks to reduce excessive drinking among
students.
"Our hearts are going out to the family, friends and the roommate of this
student, who must be grieving at this time," Mathews said.
Chancellor Mark Emmert said in a written statement, "To Corey's family, I
extend our sincere condolences on this tragedy and hope they know that we
are holding them close in our thoughts and prayers."
The incident began Thursday night when Domingue invited friends over, and he
began drinking, said Cpl. Mary Ann Godawa, a spokeswoman for the Baton Rouge
police, which is handling the off-campus death. By 12:30 a.m., Godawa said,
friends had to help Domingue to the bathroom, where they continued to check
on him for the next few hours. At 4:30 a.m., they noticed he was having
trouble breathing and called 911. A short time later, Domingue died.
Unlike the 1997 death of 21-year-old LSU undergraduate Benjamin Wynne of
Covington, who was celebrating acceptance into a fraternity, this case had
nothing to do with alleged hazing, officials said. Domingue was drinking "of
his own will and accord until he died," Godawa said. The only question
police have is how Domingue, at 19, was able to get alcohol -- something
they plan to investigate.
"Underage drinking is underage drinking," Godawa said, "whether it's at a
bar, at a football game or at a residence."
