Monty Berman was head of the London branch of the business (other
offices were established in Paris, Madrid and Rome).
The company was begun by Berman's great-grandfather in London, where
it made uniforms for the Royal family during the 19th century and
later expanded, becoming one of Europe's leading suppliers of costumes
for the stage and eventually films.
During the Second World War, Berman and Sons worked with British
officials to create authentic-looking Nazi uniforms for an espionage
operation behind the German lines.
After the war, the company established offices in Europe, and Monty's
brother David, who died in 2000, launched the company's Hollywood
division in 1949.
David Berman personally dressed the movie *Cleopatra*, televisions
*Untouchables* and Broadway's *Annie Get Your Gun* and put the neon in
Liberace's suits.
In London, it was Monty Berman who dressed the movie *A Bridge Too
Far* and the rock opera *Tommy*.
Berman also provided some costumes for the BBC TV series *Dad's Army*
including the uniforms for the U-Boat crew ("Don't tell him your name,
Pike")
Berman is remembered for his office Christmas parties - caviar and
champagne flowed.
The Beatles came to Berman's for their colourful military uniforms for
the cover of the Sgt Pepper album.
Monty Berman had a long standing association with Variety Club
International.
He received the MBE, and retired to Monaco. He was twice married. His
second wife is Maya Berman.
Monty Berman also leaves two daughters from his first union, Lesley
and Rocky.
A private funeral will take place in Monte Carlo, 19 July, 2002.
