I was watching "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" last night and afterwards
I looked up several of the cast in IMDB. They had the actor who played the
teenage brother in the movie, Christopher Pettiet, listed as dying from a drug
overdose on April 12, 2000 from a drug overdose. I also remember this actor
from when he starred as Jesse James in the ABC "Young Riders" series in the
early '90s.

Since they have a cause of death listed, I assume they are not in error
(although they have been before.) Does anyone have any information or
verification? I don't remember seeing the death mentioned in this newsgroup
nor did I see it listed in the AP Obits or in Entertainment Weekly. I searched
the CNN database and came up with nothing. Although not a major actor, I would
expect that it would have been covered in the media especially since it looks
like it was another young actor dying from a drug overdose (and he was the same
age as River Phoenix when he died).

I don't know the actor in question, but past posts in this newsgroup have
indicated a lot of wrong info (errors? pranks?) on the IMDB. Last year
someone noted that a number of actors of a certain age and a certain size
(including M. Emmett Walsh and David Huddleston) were listed as having died of
heart attacks when actually they were still alive and well. Then a few months
ago a young actress was listed on the IMDB as having died of a broken neck --
and again the info was wrong. So you're smart to take this one with a grain
of salt until you get further verification. Good luck.

I went to a fansite to see if it meshed with IMdB. Unfortunately, it
did.

Except that the fan site could have taken the info from the IMDb! Oh,
the horror, the horror. Where does it all end?
If you can find an address for an agent, you could probably find out for
sure. The IMDb used to be pretty good about agents being listed, or at
least an address where you can send fan mail.

This name appears in the Social Security Death Index at Rootsweb.com,
with the same birth and death dates as in the IMDB. Of course, could be
a person with the same name as the actor.

What sort of social security death benefit would be payable on someone
so young?

Perhaps the lump-sum death benefit to his survivors (parents if he weren't
married.)

A little more digging, a little more research...

A 250.00 Death Benefit is paid out of Social Security when you die.
Not even enough to pay for a cremation casket though.
