Los Angeles (AP) --

Richard Stahl, an actor whose more than 40-year career stretched from
New York theater to film and television comedies such as "Laverne and
Shirley," has died. He was 74.

Stahl died Sunday at the Motion Picture and Television Fund's health
center in Woodland Hills after a 10-year battle with Parkinson's
disease, his wife, actress Kathryn Ish, said Wednesday.

"He had been declining for some time now," she said.

Born in Detroit, Stahl did magic tricks as a boy and moved to
California as a performer at age 15, Ish said. He served in the Army
during the Korean War, later graduating from the American Academy of
Dramatic Arts in New York.

Ish and Stahl were both off Broadway theater actors when they met in
1959. They married later that year.

In the 1960s, the pair moved to San Francisco and joined improv comedy
group The Committee, Ish said. They settled in Santa Barbara in 1975.

Stahl's film credits include 1979's "Five Easy Pieces," Mel Brooks'
1977 spoof "High Anxiety," 1980's "9 to 5" and 1996's "Ghosts of
Mississippi."

He appeared on such TV shows as "Laverne and Shirley,""The Odd Couple,"
and "Barney Miller," and held a regular stint on 1980s sitcom "It's A
Living."

"He was a funny guy, he worked in comedy all his life," Ish said.

Stahl is survived by Ish, their daughter Allegra and son Oliver.

Memorial services were pending.

"Five Easy Pieces" was 1970 film.

Didn't recognize the name, but here's the best "oh, *that* guy" pic I
could find:

Here's a good photo of him with actress Marian Mercer. It's from
"Empty Nest", where he played David Leisure's dad. Stahl had also
starred with Marian Mercer as a chef in the 1980s sitcom "Making a
Living"/"It's a Living", so it was kind of cute to see them paired
together again a few years later in "Empty Nest".
Stahl was an ever-present character actor in the 70s and 80s. I'm
sorry to hear of his passing.

Take a gander at his IMDb listing. He was everywhere:

I'm confused. :) I thought that guy was named "Earl Boen." And then
I IMDB'ed them, and both Boen AND Stahl have "It's a Living" credits.

Earl Boen played Dennis Hubner (1981-1982) {2nd Season}

Not to be confused with Jim Stahl (Nelson Flavor on "Mork & Mindy"...a
Ed Begley Jr. look-a-like) or Dick Schaal (Leo the photographer on
"Phyllis").

Or Richard Shull, who starred in "Holmes & Yoyo" (and died in 1999)

I remember the name and found a picture on google images - I remember
him very well from 1970s sitcoms, including All in the Family and the
Bob Newhart Show. Very dry style, and funny. If he was 74 when he
passed away, he was in his early-mid 40s then, but he looked much
older.

At first I thought it *was* Dick Schaal. AFAIK Schaal is the only
actor to have played Chuckles the Clown, a bit Schaal got primarily
because he was married to Valerie Harper at the time.

Richard Schaal also starred in the syndicated comedy "Please Stand By"
in the 1970s.

Schaal had hair. Richard Stahl was bald and heavyset.

I always thought the recently deceased Arthur Franz and Eduard Franz
were the same person.

...one of my favourite comic actresses, Marcie Barkin, was a regular
with Schaal on "Please Stand By." After getting the pass-by by too many
Hollywood casting directors, she went into computer programming and now
runs her own company in Boulder, Colorado...

One of my favorite Richard Stahl performances was a guest spot he did
on "Happy Days" as Berkeley 'Bronco' Van Alden, an impulsive
millionaire who buys Fonzie's garage:
"I'm so happy, I feel like singing. I think I'll buy the McGuire
Sisters!"

The IMDb said Richard Stahl did go by the name "Dick Stahl"
occasionally so I could see why there would be confusion. But there's
been good photos of him on this thread so we probably all recognize him
now. Like I said, he was *everywhere* in the 70s and 80s.
