Lionel Roger Price Pugh, CBE, VRD, who died 11 February, 2002, aged
85, was Chairman of the British Steel Corporation (UK), 1974-77, and
Executive Member, British Steel Coroporation, 1972-7.

He was born 9 May, 1916, the son of Henry George Pugh, of Cardiff, and
was educated at Clifton.

Some of Pugh's appointments include:Fellow of the Institute of
Chartered Accountants; Supply Officer in the RNVR, 1938-60; war
service mainly in the Mediterranean, 1939-46; retired as
Leiutenant-Commander, RNR, 1960.

He was with Deloitte & Co., 1933-47; joined Guest Keen Baldwins Iron &
Steel Co., Ltd, 1947; director, 1955; Managing Director, 1960;
Chairman, 1962; joint Managing Director, GKN Steel, 1964. Director,
Product Co-ordination, British Steel Coproration, 1967; Deputy
Commercial Managing Director, 1969; Managing Director,Ops and
Supplies, 1970; Member., Corporate Finance and Planning, 1972.

Chairman, British Steel Coproration (UK) Ltd, 1974-77; BSC Chemicals
Ltd, 1974-77; Redpath Dorman Long, 1974-77; &c.

He was President of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1973; Hon Member
of the American Iron & Steel Institute, 1973; Metals Soc., 1976;
Institute of Metals, 1985; Institute of Materials, 1992.

Pugh was a member of the Civil Aviation Council for Wales, 1962-66;
part-time member South Wales Electricity Board, 1963-67; Deputy
Lieutenant for South Glamorgan, 1963-78.

He received the Gold Cross of Merit (Poland) 1942; the VRD, 1953; and
the CBE, 1975.

Mr Pugh, of Bournes Green, Oakridge, Gloucestershire, married in 1942,
Joyce Norma Nash, by whom he had one son, Roger, and one daughter,
Vanessa.
