The first poster is referring to Diana Hyland who played the mom in the
first season. She was living with a much younger John Travolta when she
was stricken with cancer and died.
Betty Buckley came in later, like right away later, as the stepmother.

Actually as I recall she didn't even make it through the first season and she
had the cancer before the show started filming but didn't realize it was as bad
as it turned out to be.

O'Grady was found dead in her mobile home by a neighbor. The cause of death was
under investigation, but there was no indication of suspicious circumstances,
the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
O'Grady played Mary Bradford, the eldest daughter of newspaper columnist Tom
Bradford on the ABC comedy-drama that aired from 1977 to 1981.
After the show, O'Grady drifted away from acting, according to a story in TV
Guide last year.
Her mother, Mary Grady, was one of Hollywood's top children's agents, and her
brother, Don Grady, played Robbie Douglas on ``My Three Sons,'' which aired
from 1960 to 1972.
Yes, she was only in the pilot, as was Mark Hamlin.

I know Mark Hamill was signed,I didn't think he actually did the
pilot.Diana Hyland was not only in the first episode, but the
show debuted as a mid-season replacement and she died as her
episodes were being shown...after those few episodes, they
hired Buckley for the first full season. They took several episodes
before she became the stepmother(she came in as a teacher for a
kid who needed a tutor),but it was planned all along. No room for
viewers preferring that she not marry in(I much preferred Hyland).
Not sure about Mary Braden's current status(the series is
based on Thomas Braden and his family...Diana Hyland died,
Joan Braden didn't,then).

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) - Lani O'Grady, who played Dick Van Patten's
oldest daughter on the 1970s TV show ``Eight is Enough,'' was found dead
Tuesday. She was 46.
