KENNEDY HEIGHTS – A 17-year-old Colerain Township boy was arrested
Monday night and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of
another 17-year-old who police say was his accomplice in a robbery on
Montgomery Road Sunday afternoon.
Police are charging the youth, even though they think he didn’t shoot
the victim. The fatal shots might have come from someone trying to
help the robbery victim, police said.
The Colerain teen is charged with murder and aggravated robbery in the
death of Kevin Stevenson, of Mount Healthy, police said Monday night.
Because he and Stevenson were committing a felony during which a
person was killed, he was charged with murder, homicide Sgt. Robert
Liston said. The person who fired the shot that killed Stevenson
remained at large Tuesday, Liston said.
The teens hatched the robbery plan with the help of an acquaintance of
Stevenson’s from Kennedy Heights, police said.
Police say the acquaintance set up the teens with two guns so they
could rob the vendor. The vendor, police said, was thought to carry
large amounts of cash.
Police gave this account of the incident:
When the teens arrived at the vendor’s stand in the 6500 block of
Montgomery Road and began looking around just at 2:50 p.m. Sunday, the
Colerain teen asked the vendor if there were any other things for
sale. The vendor then walked with him behind the stand to his red van.
That is when the teen pulled out his gun. The two scuffled and the
vendor ended up with the gun. As the teens ran off, shots rang out and
Stevenson fell to the ground.
The gun that Stevenson was supposedly given was not with him when
police found him.
Now police have a missing gun and a shooter or shooters on the loose.
For the next 24 hours, the Colerain teen tried to keep a low profile.
He had been in trouble at school and was recently suspended. That
suspension was to end Monday, but he did not show up for classes in
Colerain, police said. He was arrested Monday evening.
