Driver charged with DUI in Millcreek accident
FROM: The Erie Times-News (January 19th) ~
Alicia M. Pugh tried to shake her passenger awake.
Kelly Pol didn't respond.
Pugh gave up, and told witnesses that she had to go.
She told them she had to go to the Cab tavern to
meet her boyfriend.
But witnesses kept Pugh at the scene of the Thursday
night car crash in the 4200 block of West Lake Road
until police and ambulances arrived to help the
critically injured 22-year-old Pol.
Millcreek Township Police included statements from
witnesses about Pugh's behavior after the crash in a
criminal complaint filed in the case.
That same complaint said Pugh's blood alcohol
content at the scene measured 0.17 percent, more
than double the state limit of 0.8 percent.
Police have charged Pugh with accidents involving
death or personal injury, driving under the influence,
aggravated assault by vehicle while under the
influence, reckless endangerment, driving without
a valid license, and other traffic-related charges.
Thursday's accident happened at 11:23 p.m. in the
4200 block of West Ridge Road. The first officer
on the scene reported seeing a silver Buick facing
north in the west lane of the road. The criminal
complaint said the vehicle's passenger side had struck
the telephone pole on the north berm of the road.
Pugh, who lives in the 1100 block of West 26th Street,
told the officer that "her vehicle was experiencing
mechanical problems and she lost control and struck
the pole," the complaint said.
The officer said he smelled alcohol on Pugh and
gave her two field sobriety tests, which she failed.
Witnesses also told him that they saw the silver Buick
driving at a high rate of speed west along West Ridge
Road just before the accident, according to the report.
Pol remained in critical condition at Hamot Medical
Center Friday night.
As word of the accident spread, Pol's friends urged
her to get better on her www.myspace.com page Friday.
"Kels, get better there are too many people who need
you," one friend wrote.
Pol referenced a quote at the top of her page on the
social networking Web site.
"Live life like there is no tomorrow because you never
know if there will be a tomorrow," she wrote.
