ORONOGO, Mo.

Leonard E. (Lenny) Boyer, 67, of rural Oronogo, passed away Wednesday
morning, June 12, 2013.

Lenny was the seventh son born to the late Chester Vern and Mabel
Agnes (Means) Boyer on Mar. 12, 1946. Lenny graduated from Alba High
School in 1964. He was named in the top 100 in the United States to
the Little All-American Basketball team as a senior and was given the
Sports Illustrated Award of Merit on March 23, 1964.

Upon graduating from high school, Lenny signed a professional baseball
contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, following in the footsteps of
his older brothers. Lenny played seven years in the Cardinal
Organization. He spent six years in the Army National Guard.

While attending College in Conway, Ark., he met Gail Derryberry. They
were married on Nov. 24, 1972, in North Little Rock, Ark.

He worked for Arkansas Power and Light for approximately seven years.
The family moved to Webb City in 1979, where Lenny took a position
with Empire District Electric Company. He worked for Empire for 32
years as a line foreman, retiring in 2011, at the age of 65. Lenny
enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, and playing and coaching
all types of sports. He loved his family with all of his heart. He
was a very giving and generous man. Lenny will be missed by all who
loved him.

Surviving is his wife, of 40 years, Gail (Derryberry); two sons, Eric
Matthew (Matt) (wife Mandy), of Grain Valley, Mo., John Lucas (Luke),
of Oronogo; two grandsons, Kaden and Kooper and one granddaughter,
Kailey, of Grain Valley; four brothers, Cloyd (wife Nadine), of
Jasper, Mo., Wayne (wife Lois), of Kokomo, Ind., Lynn (wife Lyla), of
Carl Junction and Ronnie, of Joplin; six sisters, Juanita Woodmansee,
of Alba, Dolores Webb, of Broken Arrow, Okla., Pansy (husband Russell)
Schell, of Alba, Shirley (husband Jack) Lockhart, of Fayetteville,
Ark., Bobbi McNary, of Joplin, Marcy Layton, of Oronogo; brother-in-
law, Buck (wife Vicki) Derryberry, of Jasper, sister-in-law Shelley
(husband Ken) Wasson, of Ft. Smith, Ark.; numerous nieces, nephews and
cousins.

He was preceded in death by parents, Vern and Mabel Boyer; brothers,
Ken Boyer, Clete Boyer; and sister, Lela Thelma.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 15, at 2 p.m. with
visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the services at the Alba
Christian Church, Main Street and Hatch, with Galen King Officiating.
A private burial will be at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home, Webb
City.

All seven brothers played professional baseball,but Cloyd's the only
survivor who made it to the majors...was baseball success an anti-survival
characteristic for a Boyer?
