From The Official James Garner Fan Page on Facebook:

We are very saddened to report that Juanita Bartlett passed away last night at her home. Juanita was one of the brilliant writer/producers on "The Rockford Files." She was originally Jim's secretary on "Nichols" when she broke into writing. She wrote or co-wrote 35 episodes of "Rockford." Ater "The Rockford Files" Juanita wrote for "The Greatest American Hero," "Tenspeed and Brownshoe," "Scarecrow and Mrs. King" and in the mid 80's began producing the Carroll O'Connor hit "In the Heat of the Night" on NBC.

[She also wrote "The New Maverick," the 1978 TV movie that reunited brothers James Garner and Jack Kelly. And she was executive producer on the second season of "Spenser For Hire."]

Juanita got her big break as a writer when she asked "Nichols" writer/producer Frank Pierce if he needed a script for Bertha. Frank did not recall a character named Bertha (who was actually the unseen namesake of the local saloon). Frank said to Juanita to write one. Everyone loved it and so she was moved from secretary to staf writer in a heartbeat. For a few days she continued to make coffee until they told her that the new secretary would do that.

IMDB listed him as:

Creator: Frank Pierson

(Not Pierce)

Just for a change of pace, this sig is *not* an obscure reference to

Good call. Thanks for the correction, I'll let them know.

Damn, I liked Nichols. This is probably one of the reasons why.

Bartlett wrote some of the finest episodes of my all-time favorite TV crime drama, and was a real secretary-to-exec success story. Thanks for helping make Jim Rockford so real, Juanita!

She was a very talented writer. Thankfully her true talents were
discovered and appreciated. :)

So was she involved with the "Bret Maverick" series Garner moved on to
immediately after Rockford Files?

No, she didn't write any scripts for that series. "Bret Maverick" aired in the 1981-82 season, and IMDB says that she was working as an executive producer and writer on "The Greatest American Hero" that season.

Strange that there have been no obits or death notices for her since that Facebook posting on Wednesday (which I do believe to be accurate). They did note that she was intensely private (and did not want her age posted), but still.

She was apparently intensely private enough that she never wanted her photographic image published. I've been trying without success to find a photograph of her for years. (Same thing with longtime Wash Post TV writer Lisa de Moraes. Some people are just camera-shy, I suppose.)

Are you serious?

Google "Juanita Bartlett".

If you get lost scrolling down to the second result, google "Juanita
Bartlett photo".

You're putting us on, right?

Did that. Tend to agree with the previous poster.

Found one photo, that I think was recent. Wasn't too special.
I think we'd all like to see a photo of her, c. 1971.

But the point of course is that as a "behind the scenes" personality, her
appearance isn't paramount, as it is with the on-camera talents.

>You're putting us on, right?

Nope.

(The Republican mind, in a nutshell)
You believe things that are incomprehensible, inconsistent, impossible
because we have commanded you to believe them; go then and do what is
unjust because we command it. Such people show admirable reasoning. Truly,
whoever is able to make you absurd is able to make you unjust. If the
God-given understanding of your mind does not resist a demand to believe
what is impossible, then you will not resist a demand to do wrong to that
God-given sense of justice in your heart. As soon as one faculty of your
soul has been dominated, other faculties will follow as well. And from this
derives all those crimes of religion which have overrun the world.

I agree with the other poster... she's not that hard to find.

Ms. Bartlett is in the blue dress in the photo on this page:

First row (seated): James Garner.
Second row: Charles Floyd Johnson, Meta Rosenberg, Juanita Bartlett.
Third row: Stephen J. Cannell, David Chase.

Hmmm...what's the death rate for that photo?
I know Rosenberg and Cannell are dead.

______________________________________________

I had seen that photo, but did not realize that Bartlett was the woman in the blue dress. Thanks much for the clarification!

As for the (seemingly) larger issue of people herein not believing how incompetent I am with the Internet, I'm embarrassed to report IT'S TRUE. I just don't know how to manipulate these darned search engines to get me the results I'm seeking.

I'm SORRY all of you people are more talented at this than I am, but it's not an act! When I try to search for things, I get a flurry of results, most of which seem irrelevant and none of which usually is what I'm looking for. Then when one of you comparative-wizards tries the same search, you get what I wanted, and I look like a fool or liar to you!

But I'm not. A friend who is sympathetic to my inadequacies in this regard--instead of just ridiculing me, as ya'll herein do--managed to find a LOAD of info about that Carl Bressler claymation director I was recently asking about herein.

This, when I came up with a big load of NOTHING about Carl when I tried. As it happens, it's still unclear whether the Carl Bressler I'm searching for is dead or alive, but my friend is zeroing in on that answer as I type. Meanwhile, I'm a BIG ZERO when it comes to search-engine searching for Carl Bressler, or Juanita Bartlett, or Lisa de Moreas, or anyone else I ask about herein.

Ya'll might not believe it, but it's true. I can't understand why so many of you from David Carson on down herein think I'm lying to you about this, or just to lazy to do my own searches! What would be the point? The Internet is NOT as easy to use as so many of you more-talented types find it to be.

Me, I'm just a baby boomer who doesn't even know how to disguise my identity herein--not that I would want to; those who remain anonymous on the Internet to flame people are just immature cowards in my view--much less how to use a so-called "kill-file", whatever that (precisely) is.

Thanks in advance for reading this, and please don't flame me because of it.

Yes - Rosenberg, Cannell, and now Bartlett are gone.

Chas. Floyd Johnson and David Chase are still with us, and still very active - Johnson is executive producer of "NCIS," and Chase was creator, head writer and executive producer of "The Sopranos."

Garner has been largely retired since having a stroke in 2008, but he did write an autobiography in 2011 and has done a few cartoon voices.

Bryan, please be careful when you accuse people. I have never said
think you're lying. Neither, to my knowledge, has anyone else, and
certainly no one in this thread has.

You know by now that when you state you've spent years unsuccessfully
trying to find out something that can be learned with a three-word
Google search, you're going to be teased about it.

My apologies, David, for the over-reaction. Until this moment I never realized that all of this fell under the category of "teasing". Teasing I can take, and even admit that my writing style invites it at times;

I was mistaken in taking all of such critical commentary of my cyber incompetence as instead being mean-spirited "flaming". I much appreciate the clarification, and shall sleep less restlessly at night as a result.
