Katharine Dennis Hall, wife of former University of Kentucky basketball coach Joe B. Hall
The Kentucky Wizard
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Katharine Dennis Hall, wife of former University of
Kentucky basketball coach Joe B. Hall for 55 years, died Wednesday of cancer
at her home. She was 75.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Crestwood Christian Church, 1882
Bellefonte Drive, with visitation from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Kerr Brothers
Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Road. She will be buried in Lexington
Cemetery.
"She was the most loving, giving person that you'd ever know," said her son,
Steve, of Lexington. "She lived for her children and her grandchildren. They
were her life.. She cherished them more than anything. And she never
complained about anything. She always put other people's needs first."
In addition to her husband and son, she is survived by two daughters, Judy
Derrickson of Lexington and Kathy Summers of Atlanta. Her grandchildren are
Jeffrey and Laura Katharine Derrickson and Katharine Summers.
Katharine and Joe Hall grew up in Harrison County. She was born in Berry,
Ky., on Oct. 25, 1931, to the late Clarence and Katharine Dennis.
Joe Hall coached at Regis College in Denver and Central Missouri State
University before going to UK in 1965 as an assistant to Adolph Rupp. He
succeeded Rupp in 1972 and coached until 1985, winning the 1978 national
championship. He appears on "The Joe B. and Denny Show," a two-hour weekday
morning radio show with retired University of Louisville coach Denny Crum.
Pallbearers will include former UK All-American Kyle Macy. Among the
honorary pallbearers are Oscar Combs, founder of The Cats' Pause sports
weekly, and Louis Stout, who played for Hall at Regis and went on to become
commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.
Memorial contributions: Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive,
Lexington 40504; Lexington Humane Society, 1600 Old Frankfort Pike,
Lexington 40504; Crestwood Christian Church, 1882 Bellefonte Drive,
Lexington 40503.

Yep, he coaches over at Morehead State, John. He's been there for quite a
while now. Remember all that pretty black hair he had? It's is gone,
replaced with stubby grey hair on the sides and back, and a nice shiny bald
spot on top. That boy could play some serious B-ball, that's for sure. Do
you remember him wiping his hands on his socks before each foul shot?
Another former Wildcat, Travis Ford, is the coach of University of
Massachusetts, and before this he was coaching at Campbellsville University
and EKU.

coaching:

Somewhat seriously, I was at my Mom's 80th birthday party in Kentucky
a few weekends ago and my Dad's former law partner's son is now a
practicing attorney. Vince studied in London (your London) and I'll
bet that he has to explain to some of the locals that he didn't go to
college in that same small town where Colonel Sanders got his start
cookin' chicken (i.e. London, KY).
One has to laugh at this stuff.
