Natel King traveled alone to cities across North America,
looking to hit it big in adult entertainment by performing
and posing in hard-core films and photo shoots that paid up
to $1,000 per day.

Her last trip was to Conshohocken, where photographer
Anthony J. Frederick kept a basement apartment in the 100
block of West Third Avenue filled with bondage devices and
fake blood.

The burly photographer and platinum-blond actress - who
appeared professionally as Taylor Sumers, the Sexy
Canadian - found each other on the Internet, where would-be
porn stars often sell their services to photographers
seeking willing subjects.

Yesterday, police charged Frederick with killing King,
slashing her throat from ear to ear, and dumping her nude
body in a ravine above the Schuylkill in Whitemarsh
Township.

At Frederick's apartment, police found a chilling
handwritten poem - its author unknown - that read: "Cut with
a knife, blood does flow/You may bleed out, death coming on
slow... ."

Although no clear motive has been established, Montgomery
County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr. had two
theories. It could have been a dispute over payment, or "It
could be an obsession with young women and blood."

King's body was found wrapped in blue drapes identical to
the backdrop seen in portraits on Frederick's Web site,
Castor said. The fabrics were torn in a manner consistent
with stab wounds.

Also, King was found gagged with a sexual device: a red ball
near her mouth and leather straps affixed to her head. In
photos Frederick had taken of King at a Hampton Inn in the
Oaks section of Upper Providence Township, King wore a
similar device.

King, 23, who posed for photos at both the hotel and
Frederick's apartment, had several stab wounds to the chest
and neck, as well as defensive cuts on her hands.

"This woman put up a big fight," Castor said.

Also charged was Jennifer Mitkus, 29, of Oaks. Described as
Frederick's photography assistant, Mitkus faces one count
each of lying to police and hindering apprehension.

The image conjured by police of a bloodthirsty pornographer
stunned Frederick's next-door neighbors in the Eagleville
subdivision where he lives with his wife, Miriam, and their
2-year-old son.

"We've known him for quite a long time, and he's been
nothing but totally cool," said Shane Ericson, 30, a friend
and neighbor for 17 years.

Frederick, 46, had no criminal record in Montgomery County,
a search of county records revealed.

However, Conshohocken police responded to a call from
Frederick's apartment Jan. 31 after a New York woman said he
had refused to pay her for a photo shoot, according to an
affidavit. She told police she had posed in bondage
positions at Frederick's studio, where he kept shackles
affixed to the basement ceiling, cords and tape, and a
battery-operated sexual device stained with what appeared to
be blood.

Frederick "handcuffed me to a heater and placed a ball gag
in my mouth," the woman told police. When she began to cry,
he removed the gag and handcuffs.

King had been missing since Feb. 29, when she made a phone
call to her roommate in Canada to say that Frederick and
Mitkus were "weirdos" and that she feared for her life.
Police in Conshohocken found her car outside the studio.

Friends of King said that last month was not the first time
that she had expressed fears about Frederick.

Dwayne Ward, an Internet pornographer in the Detroit area
who had filmed King, said he had received a phone call in
December from King, working in Allentown at the time. She
was upset because Frederick had called her and asked her to
take a taxi to a remote location outside Allentown, he said.

"She was really freaked out, because she felt he was trying
to lure her into a trap," Ward said yesterday. "I told her
it would be stupid to go with him, and she didn't. I just
wish she had called me beforehand this time."

Stacy Sinn, who had performed on camera with King, said her
friend was "really shook up" by the December incident with
Frederick.

"It seemed too shady for her," she said.

Castor declined to comment on any previous contact between
King and the man accused in her killing.

Daniel King said his daughter was working in adult
entertainment to pay for college. She was studying
psychology through a correspondence program at a Canadian
university, he said.

"She was very family-oriented and hard-working. No drugs or
anything like that," he said.

Frederick and Mitkus were arraigned before District Justice
Deborah A. Lukens in Lafayette Hill. Because he is charged
with homicide, Frederick was denied bail and taken to the
Montgomery County Correctional Facility after a brief court
appearance.

Asked by reporters whether he knew what had happened to
King, Frederick said, "No, I don't."

When asked whether he was innocent, Frederick said, "Yes, I
am."

Mitkus was taken to the county prison after failing to make
$100,000 cash bail.

Frederick faces the possibility of the death penalty, the
maximum penalty of a first-degree murder conviction.

If convicted, Mitkus faces a maximum nine years in prison.
