The family of gospel singer Jake Hess issued a statement Sunday
morning that he passed away at age 76. He had been in failing health
recently due to a heart attack and pneumonia.

He was a legend in "Southern Gospel" and traveled extensively with the
Gaither ensemble.

He had a great sense of humor and was perhaps known for having the
worst toupee around; a fact he didn't hide.

It's amazing he lived as long as he did with his heart trouble. I interviewed
him about four years ago for an article and he was an all-around nice guy -
great stories about Bill Gaither, Terry Bradshaw, etc.

No, I'm sorry to say he isn't. He passed away Dec.28, 2001.
Interestingly, when I was "Googling" for him, I saw a posting from 2001
in a Southern Gospel ng noting Hovie Lister's passing and the poster
wondering if Jake Hess was still alive.

Here's a page about Hovie Lister with his picture:

Nope, he passed away a couple of years ago I believe. Wendy
Bagwell, another gospel singer, but a much better story-teller,
famous for the Eastern Kentucky Church that "handled snakes"
story, died sometime around 1996 I believe. The reason I
mentioned him is that your question reminded me of something
Bagwell said once during one of his recorded concerts in which
he was telling a story of the time his gospel group was in
Spain, and was describing just how well dressed a Spaniard who
owned a restaurant they at was. That part of the story went
something like this:

That was the prettiest man that I have ever seen, his hair was
all slickered up, he had a fancy mustache, curled up at the
ends, dressed to the nines, patton leather shoes, I mean that
man was absolutely pretty (laughter).

Why, that man was so pretty, that he'd make Hovie Lister look
like he had been dead at least six months (laughter)

(laughter) How come nobody told me that Hovie was here?!?!

Good singer, and yes, a horrible toupee, which will live on, no
doubt.

From your mouth to God's ear, Wiz. I grew up watching Jake Hess's
daily nooner Gospel show on WLAC in Nashville. He was not a great
singer, but he was a delightful personality and a man of great faith.
I certainly hope the hereafter is everything he envisioned it to be.

He deserves no less.

Well said.
He was Elvis' favorite gospel singer (IIRC).
"Prayer is the Key to Heaven, but Faith Unlocks the Door".... <my
favorite Jake Hess song>

Would he have agreed with that last sentence, though? Isn't lack of
deserving a major theme of many Gospel songs?

Hey Doc, you mentioning Hess' Nashville show reminded me of
something. Do you remember Rev. J. Bazzell Mull and his "Mull's
Singing Convention" that was broadcast out of Knoxville,? I know
he published a ton of gospel song books, and whenever I visited
my aunt in East Tennessee, I used to watch him and his wife on
(I think) WATE in Knoxville. Also do you remember Stu Phillips'
show "That Nashville Place"? A family I know very well used to
perform on that show, "The Geary's".

Wiz, I can't quite place the faces, but the names do ring a bell.
Mostly I remember Brock Spear and the Happy Goodmans and the Sego
Bros. & Naomi, and of course I remember the Oak Ridge Boys in the days
before they went pop.

Jake Hess sang a song that has haunted me down through the years. The
chorus went, "When I learn enough to really live, I'll be old enough
to die." <shudder>

You can see a pic of Mull and his wife here, Doc:

http://www.gospelmusic.org/hall_of_fame/inductee_bio.cfm?ID=350

You may recall, that he was, (and still is, he's not on-topic
yet) almost completely blind since he was a toddler. Good 'ole
Cas Walker (I know you remmember that name) started off on
television about the same time, and Cas ran many a commercial on
Mull's gospel singing show, which of course benefited them both.
Both the Speer and Goodman Familys sang for several generations,
and I guess neither group has two of their album covers with the
same people in both, for everytime you looked, either one left,
or another one joined. I don't recall the song that Hess sang,
but those words are indeed sad, but true. <another shudder>
