Matthew F. Maury Osborne, a retired Naval Research Laboratory
physicist who served as mayor of Forest Heights, Maryland, from 1949
to 1951, and a resident of Oakton, Virginia, died of congestive heart
failure March 30, 2003, at the home of a son in Oakton, at the age of
86.

He worked for the NRL for 32 years before retiring in 1973 and was the
author of more than 40 scientific works on topics ranging from
anti-submarine warfare to how fish swim and birds fly.

Mr. Osborne, a native of Norfolk, Virginia, came to the Washington DC
area in 1941. He lived in Forest Heights from 1944 to 1955, and then
in Hillcrest Heights until 1993. He was a graduate of the University
of Virginia and received a doctorate in physics from the University of
Maryland in 1959.

Author of the 1959 paper "Brownian Motion in the Stock Market," he
taught a course on the stock market at the University of California at
Berkeley's graduate business school in 1972.
