Drummer for gospel group Gold City dies in Gadsden crash
Associated Press
GADSDEN, Ala. - Douglas "Doug" William Riley, the drummer for the
gospel group Gold City, died in a one-car wreck in Gadsden.
Police said Riley, 35, of Glencoe, was driving a 2003 Land Rover
Discovery that wrecked at 12:42 a.m. Tuesday. The vehicle struck a
power pole and overturned.
Police Capt. Jeff Wright said it's possible the SUV had a tire blowout.
Police said no seat belt was in use, there was no air bag deployment
and Riley was partially ejected in the crash.
Riley was headed for the group's recording studio when the accident
happened, according to Jonathan Wilburn, the group's lead singer.
The group has been a member of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame since
1992. Riley began traveling with Gold City in the summer of 1989.
Along with being the group's drummer, Riley produced and wrote numerous
songs for Gold City, including the hits "Are You Ready?" and "Mercy
Rescues Me."
Riley's father, Tim Riley, is the retired bass singer and owner of the
group.
Gold City has enjoyed more than 60 Singing News Fan Awards, including
Albums of the Year, Songs of the Year, Groups of the Year, and
Individuals of the Year awards.
The group has had multiple Dove Award nominations and was recognized
with a Dove award for Southern Gospel Song of the Year in 1993 for
"There Rose A Lamb."
Riley is survived by his wife, Amy, and two sons.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at 11 a.m. at Crosspoint
Community Church with burial in Crestwood Cemetery.
