I discovered a very interesting obituary about the above mentioned
person in the Lisbon-Woodbine neighborhood column of this weeks Howard
County (MD) Times which came out today. She passed away on December 31
at the age of 90 from pneumonia at her home, Happy Retreat, near the
town of Daisy. She was a supporter of Maryland's thoroughbred horse
breeding and racing industry. She was also known for her breeding and
showing of Scottish terriers and judged the best of the show each year
at the Westminster Kennel Club Show at Madison Square Garden. She also
judged in England at their notable dog show, Crufts. Survivors include a
niece, actress Glenn Close; and a half-sister, actress Dina Merrill, who
was once married to Oscar winning actor Cliff Robertson.

If she was a half-sister of Dina Merrill and her name was Close...
I assume her mother was the fabled cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather
Post (Close Hutton[Merrill's father] Davies May)?

It has been quite some time since I read Marjorie Merriweather Post's bio, but
don't recall any daughters but Dina Merrill. Perhaps they shared the same
father.

Dina Merrill was the daughter of E.F. Hutton by Marjorie Merriweather
Post.I can't see that EFH would have fathered a daughter by an earlier
wife, known by the name of his later wife's previous husband...?

Thanks for the info - as mentioned it has been years since I read the book
and, although your reminder jogged my memory on Dina's father - I really
don't recall any other children for MMP. So we would seem to have a number
possibilities starting with an out and out mistake on the part of whoever
wrote the obit running to some sort of "courtesy" relationship, a good friend
who is dubbed aunt or uncle. Will be interested if someone can clarify the
mystery
