Sir John Baynes, 7th Baronet, the distinguished military historian,
died 22 January, 2005. He was aged 76.

John Christopher Malcolm Baynes was born 24 April, 1928, son of Sir
Rory Malcolm Stuart Baynes, 6th Baronet, by his wife Ethel Audrey,
daughter of Edward Giles, CIE.

He was educated at Sedbergh; Royal Military College Sandhurst,
Edinburgh University (MSc).

Career: Commissined into the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 1949; served
in Malaya 1950-53, and was mentioned in despatches; served in Aden,
1966; Defence Fellow, University of Edinburgh, 1968-69; commanded 52nd
Lowland Volunteers [T.A.V.R.] 1969-72; retired from the army 1972;
Order of the Sword [1st Class] Sweden, 1965.

His publications include: Morale [1967]; The Jacobite Rising of 1715
[1970]; History of the Cameronians Vol. 1V [1971]; The Soldier in
Modern Society [1971]; Soldiers of Scotland [1988]; The Fortgotten
Victor [1989]; A Tale of Two Captains [1990]; No Reward But Honour?
[1991]; Urquhart of Arnhem [1993]; Far From a Donkey: General Sir Ivor
Maxse [1995]; For Love of Justice [1997] &c.

He succeeded his father in the baronetcy [created in 1801], 1979.

Sir John married in 1955, Shirley Maxwell, the only daughter of Robert
Allan Dodds, by whom he had four sons. The baronetcy now devolves upon
the eldest son, Christopher Rory Baynes, b. 11 May, 1956.
