Major John Errington, who has died aged 104, was a pre-war Regular Army officer serving with the Royal Scots (the Royal Regiment) who narrowly evaded a massacre in 1940 during the withdrawal to Dunkirk and survived five years as a prisoner of war.

Maj Errington was the oldest veteran of the Royal Scots regiment, who fought at Dunkirk and spent five years as a prisoner of war. From Shrewsbury, Shropshire, he fought at the battle of Le Paradis in Northern France in May 1940, helping to delay the German advance. He is thought to have been the last surviving officer commissioned before World War Two.
