A young woman died Tuesday after falling about 25 feet
from a climbing wall at a minor league baseball game,
officials said.
Christine Ewing, 22, was unconscious with head injuries
when firefighters arrived shortly after the fall Monday
evening, said Steve Sapp, spokesman for the Columbia
Fire Department.
It was unclear why she fell, Sapp said.
The temporary climbing wall had been brought into
Taylor Stadium at the University of Missouri campus for
the Frontier League Mid-Missouri Mavericks game
against the Gateway Grizzlies.
Mavericks General Manager Pat Daly told KFRU-AM
that the wall was provided by a Columbia company, and
not rented or owned by the team.
Daly said campus police were investigating. The police
department declined to comment Tuesday.
Randy Cole, assistant state fire marshal in Jefferson City,
said it was unclear Tuesday if the climbing wall had been
properly inspected. There was no permit on file for the
company involved, Cole said.
The walls typically are built to look like the face of a cliff
and let participants test their rock-climbing skills.
"If they have not been permitted, they are in violation of
the law," Cole said. "It's the owners' responsibility to get
the permit."
