Never having attended a funeral for a titled person of this exalted
rank (eg: "Premier Duke and Earl of England) , I am wondering why
*all* the ranking 'Royals' sent representatives rather than attending
in person? Was this some sort of royal snub?

Royals normally don't attend funerals of people not members of a Royal family
(theirs or someone else's). The Queen was in attendance at Churchill's funeral
(according to a quickie Google search on "Was the Queen at Churchill's
funeral?") but it is very unusual for her to attend a funeral of someone, even
such an exalted peer as the Duke, not a member of her family.
She normally sends senior Royals such as the Prince of Wales to foreign Royal
funerals...who she sends depends on how close she was to the family concerned.

This wasn't a funeral. It was a Memorial Service. At the funeral of
the 16th Duke of Norfolk in February, 1975, the Prince of Wales
attended along with Princess Alexandra, the Hon Mrs Angus Ogilvy.

>Are we to deduce from this that members of the Royal Family are prohibited from
>attending a Roman Catholic mass?
No, I don't believe so. They just can't marry them and retain their right to
inherit the throne. The Queen went to a Vespers service in Westminster
Cathedral in 1995, and was the first English monarch to do so since the
Reformation. I don't know whether she's been to a RC mass, but a quickie
Google search doesn't shed any light on that.
I believe that members of the Orange Order are normally prohibited from
attending a RC service or even entering a RC church; David Trimble was
disciplined for attending the RC funeral of a friend, I believe.
The Chief Rabbi, when attending Cardinal Hume's funeral a few years ago, did
not enter the Cathedral but watched it on TV from Archbishop's House.
As for the difference between a funeral and a memorial service, the memorial
service is a British institution that allows the family and close friends to
attend the actual funeral in peace, and then gives the wider circle of friends
and acquaintances a chance to officially mourn later on. Even reasonably
plebeian persons often have both a funeral and a memorial service. It's
normally not Eucharistic if Anglican in nature, but having a memorial mass
later on after a RC has died is (or was when I was growing up RC) common. I
don't believe that the monarch normally goes to either type of service. She
does send representatives if the person is important, and (as in the Duke's
case) may send members of her own family to the funeral or memorial service if
s/he is especially important. I don't expect that the Earl of Whatever Hamlet
would get much more than Paul Burrill as Queen's Representative.
Thanks for the answer. That, of course, makes it seem strange to me that no
senior member of the Royal Family would attend the memorial service for the
senior Duke (non-royal) in the land. Strange. IMHO.

Perhaps it's not a question of the royals being prohibited from
attending. Maybe it's that they simply didn't want to, in order to
avoid "making a statement" or something.
I have no idea if any senior royal has ever attended a Roman Catholic
Mass. Perhaps someone here knows.
