Professor Frank Hodson, BSc, PhD, FGS, who died at Bereweeke Court
Nursing Home, Winchester, 27 October, 2002, aged 80, was Professor of
Geology in the University of Southampton, 1958-81, since when
Emeritus.

He was born 23 November, 1921, the son of Mtthew and Gertrude Hodson,
and educated at Burnley Grammar School and at Reading University;
University of London [External student].

Career: Demonstrator, Reading University, 1947-49; Lecturer, Reading
University, 1949-58; Dean, Faculty of Science, 1972-74, and 1976-77,
Public Orator, 1970-73, University of Southampton; Murchison Fund
Geological Society, 1962; Founder Member and 1st Hon. Secretary
Palaeontol Association, 1957; President of Section C [geology]
British Association for the Advancement of Science, 1975; Hon Member
Geological Soc. de Belge, &c.

Hodson married in 1945, Ada Heyworth, by whom he had three daughters,
Alison, Stephanie and Erica.

The funeral service will take place at St Boniface Church, Chandler's
Ford, Hampshire, 4 November, 2002, at 11 a.m.
