Condo where Crane was killed to sell on eBay

Kate Nolan, The Arizona Republic
May. 14, 2003 01:15 PM

Poolside condo for sale. Two bedrooms, two baths and a scandalous past.

Bob Crane slept here.

On Thursday, the apartment at 7430 E. Chaparral Road, where TV star Robert
Crane was bludgeoned to death in 1978, goes on sale on eBay.

When the Hogan's Heroes headliner died in a bedroom littered with porn videos
and movie-making gear, he was instantly outed as a sex addict and pornographer
and was eventually the subject of two books, a Web site and a movie, 2002's
Auto Focus.

What's the price of celebrity sleaze? Scottsdale Realtor Ardy Haines and the
condo's owner/occupants Ron and Pat Herbst, put it at about $80,000.

Similar units in the Winfield Place complex go for around $100,000; online
bidding for unit 132-A opens at $180,000.
Elaine Young, possibly the most renowned celebrity real estate agent in Beverly
Hills, thinks the Herbsts may get their price.

"People love to buy houses where murders happened - and they'll pay more for
them," Young said.

"For Sharon Tate's house, they paid three times its value," she said of the
home of the 1970s starlet and wife of Roman Polansky slain by Charles Manson's
gang. "The home that actor Gig Young killed himself in was bought for two times
its value.

"According to real estate law, you are obligated to tell if a murder has been
committed there within three years. But I tell everybody everything. They want
to know," said Young, who supposes the appetite for Scottsdale scandal may be
as voracious as in Hollywood.

Winfield Place converted from rentals to condos in 1980, when a Canadian couple
purchased unit 132-A. They sold it to the Herbsts in 1986 without mentioning
the murder. Their daughter, Tami, was the one who found out.

A junior at ASU in 1986, Tami lived in the apartment for a few years while her
parents remained in Wisconsin. One night, someone anonymously left a copy of an
Arizona Republic story about the crime at her door. The unit number had been
highlighted in yellow.

Now Tami Andrate, a married 36-year-old insurance underwriter in Gilbert,
remembers it. "I freaked out and called Dad," she said. Then she locked the
windows and the doors. The next day she checked with the police and verified
that her apartment had been the crime scene.

Henceforth she steered clear of "that" bedroom and never stayed in the
apartment on the death anniversary. She said she'd often hear the toilet
mysteriously flush at night, and once she felt a presence at the end of her
bed. "I thought I needed to confront it and told it: 'Bob, I'm not afraid of
you - leave me the hell alone.' " She never heard from it/him again.

Her parents moved into the condo in 1992 and currently sleep in "that" room
without incident. They like it. Pat Herbst even seems mystified that Inside
Edition wanted to film the inside of her home after the movie Auto Focus came
out. When Deborah Norville knocked on the door, Pat didn't let her in.

The property came to market almost by chance. Haines, a friend of the Herbst
couple, has handled the sale of several units in the complex and was recently
approached by a Scottsdale bar owner who asked her about "the Crane apartment."

He offered $150,000, but the Herbsts, retirees in their 60s who hadn't thought
about selling it, asked for $180,000. The barman lost interest, but his offer
aroused their interest.

Haines, 66, and Andrade both follow eBay and agreed it was worth a try to
attract what Haines calls "that certain clientele" for whom the Crane
association would be a plus.

What if the plan backfires? The Herbsts say they are unconcerned. But they have
a lot riding on it - they own a total of five units at Winfield Place. Haines
also owns an apartment there that she plans to move into when she retires.

Pat Herbst would just as soon stay. "Moving after 11 years is gonna be a lot of
work," she said.

Upon receiving news that Ed Varner had made the remarks below, and after

Crane never woke up there either.

I wonder if there's really a hidden tunnel under that bed?

I missed that error but the one preceding it really caught my eye.
Kind of difficult for Sharon Tate to be labeled a "1970s starlet" when
she was murdered in August of 1969.

I read the article and not once did I see it say it was a motel either.
It wasn't a motel. It was a rental apartment complex. Bob Crane
rented the apartment while he was in the area performing at a dinner
theater.

The confusion might be with his friend John Carpenter. Who _was_
staying in a motel/hotel that was located just around the corner on
Scottsdale Road. It is now The Sunburst Resort. Their Four Cheese
Penne is out of this world.
