Sir Peter Proby, 2nd Baronet, FRICS, who died at his home, 18 April,
2002, aged 90, was a land agent, former Bursar of Eton College, and a
past Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.

He was born 4 December, 1911, the eldest of the three sons of Richard
George Proby, of Elton Hall, Peterborough, one of England's most
progressive landowners, & his wife, the former Betty Monica Murray.

The family is descended in the female line from William Proby, first
cousin of Sir Thomas Proby, 1st Baronet, upon whose death in 1689 the
baronetcy became extinct, and from the Earls of Carysfort, whose Irish
Earldom and Barony, and English Barony became extinct on the death of
the 5th Earl of Carysfort, KP, DL, JP, of Glenart Castle, Arklow,
Ireland, 4 September, 1909.

Lady Elizabeth Emma Proby, a sister of the last Earl, married the Rt.
Hon. Lord Claud Hamilton, MP, brother of the 1st Duke of Abercorn, and
their son, Colonel Douglas James Hamilton, (1856-1931), assumed by
Royal Licence, in 1904, the surname of Proby. Colonel Proby, as he
became, married a daughter of the 4th Earl of Donoughmore, and their
third son, Richard George, President of the Country Landowners
Association, 1947-51, was created a Baronet, 30 January, 1952.

In 1967 the first Baronet surrendered the life interest in the bulk of
his family's Elton estate, to his son and heir, Peter. This was to
help preserve and efficient estate of about 4,500 acres which had been
held by the family for 300 years. Sir Richard held control of the
family seat, Elton Hall.

Peter Proby succeeded his father as 2nd Baronet, in January, 1979.

Sir Peter was educated at Eton & Trinity College, Oxford, and served
as a Captain in the Irish Guards.

He was Bursar of Eton College, 1953-71, a Deputy Lieutenant for
Cambridgeshire, and Lord Lieutenant of the County, 1981-84.

Sir Peter married in 1944, Blanche, only daughter of Colonel Henry
Harrison Cripps, DSO, of Bath Lodge, Ballycastle, County Antrim, by
whom he had two sons, and three daughters (including twin daughters).

His elder surviving son, John, having predeceased him, the baronetcy
now passes to his younger, but only surviving son, William Henry, born
13 June, 1949.

The heir presumptive to the baronetcy is Patrick James Proby, (b.
1944), unm., nephew of the 2nd Bt.

The funeral service takes place at All Saints Church, Elton,
Peterborough, on Tuesday 30 April, 2002, at 2.30 p.m.

He did not, then, live quite as long as his father,

when he died at 92.

To be clear, this was not a selection of a cadet line in
preference to the elder...the two elder sons had died,
the second as a fifteen-year-old naval cadet and the
eldest as Lord-Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire in 1947.

One has to wonder if this Colonel Cripps could be related to
the Barons Parmoor...perhaps a son of (William) Harrison Cripps,
next elder brother of the 1st Baron, who left unspecified issue
by his first wife Blanche according to Burke's.

: His elder surviving son, John, having predeceased him, the baronetcy

The new baronet has four daughters, but no sons...

: The heir presumptive to the baronetcy is Patrick James Proby, (b.

And there are no other heirs in remainder.

: The funeral service takes place at All Saints Church, Elton,

: Peterborough, on Tuesday 30 April, 2002, at 2.30 p.m.
