Music fans in Armenia were shocked today to learn of the death of
popular singer Varduhi Vardanyan. The 30-year old pop star died in a
car accident Sunday.
The singer was returning to Yerevan, following a concert in Martuni
when the BMW-520 she was driving spun from the road and turned upside
down near the village of Getap.
According to a police report, Vardanyan died at once from a head
injury. Her traveling companions, actor Armen Khachatryan and music
video director Yeghishe Verdyan were hospitalized with serious
injuries.
By some accounts, Vardanyan called her friend, singer Goga, moments
after the accident and asked her to care for her young child.
(ArmeniaNow was unable to confirm that report, as friends of the singer
said they were too distraught to comment.)
"It was very cruel. At first I couldn't believe, that Varduhi
wasn't alive anymore," the singer's friend Anita Hakhverdyan told
ArmeniaNow.
Hakhverdyan, a presenter at the State Theater of Song, said Vardanyan
had been on a busy schedule. "She was in a constant bustle, was at
the new program shooting in the morning, then had to leave for Alaverdi
and the next day to Martuni for concerts. We asked her: 'Don't you
pity yourself?' She said: 'I promised'." Hakhverdyan said.
Varduhi Vardanyan was known for her singing, but also as easy-going and
sociable. She was married and had an 8-year old son.
During a 12 year career, she had become an Armenian favorite, and had
won 8 awards at international competitions.
