First half:

Ellin Peterson Greene, 90, of Seabrook Retirement Community in Tinton Falls, NJ, formerly of Point Pleasant, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. Ellin was born in Elizabeth, raised in Rahway and attended Rahway High School. She went on to attend Rutgers University- Douglass Campus where she received her Bachelor’s degree, her MLS degree from the Graduate School of Library Service, Rutgers and her doctorate in Creative Arts Education from the Graduate School of Education, Rutgers.

Dr. Greene was an “author, storyteller and consultant in library service to children”. Throughout her career, she authored & co-authored many books and retold numerous stories, most notably ones educating about the art of storytelling and children’s books including the beloved, The Pumpkin Giant, and the whimsical cookbook, Midsummer Magic: A Garland of Stories Charms and Recipes. She also served as a consultant to various publishers, contributed chapters to other books and published many articles to professional journals.

Dr. Greene went back to teach at her alma mater, serving as a professor at Rutgers University- Douglass Campus. She was a charter council member of what would become the Rutgers University Council on Children's Literature and currently has a fellowship program in her honor there. In the early 1980’s, Dr. Greene worked as an associate professor and later Dean of Students at the University of Chicago Graduate Library School. She relocated to the New York Public Library in the mid 1980’s where she excelled as a Storytelling Specialist and Assistant Coordinator of Children’s Services. There, she authored and directed several fund granted projects including “The Illustrator as Storyteller” project and The New York Public Library’s “Early Childhood Project”.

Throughout her career, Dr. Greene won many esteemed awards and honors for her passion of writing and storytelling. She was awarded a certificate of Merit from The World’s Who’s Who of Women (Cambridge) in 1986, was the recipient of the 2002 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Storytelling Oracle and most recently was being considered for the Marquis Who’s Who 2018 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. She was the featured storyteller at the 20th anniversary of the National Storytelling Festival and received a Storytelling World Honor for her retelling of the folktale The Little Golden Lamb which is listed in The New York Public Library’s Children’s Books 2000-One Hundred Titles for Reading and Sharing.

Dr. Greene was a proud and dedicated member of many organizations in association to her craft including the American Library Association, the esteemed Douglass Society at Rutgers University as a distinguished alumnae and the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators to name just a few...
