Actor Robert Urich Dies From Cancer

LOS ANGELES -- Robert Urich, an Emmy-winning actor best known for his starring

roles in "Soap" and "Spenser: For Hire," has died after battling cancer. He
was 55.

Urich died Tuesday morning at a hospital in Thousand Oaks surrounded by family

members and friends, publicist Cindy Guagenti said.

Urich announced in 1996 that he was suffering from synovial cell sarcoma, a
rare cancer that attacks the body's joints. The cancer went into remission
after he underwent chemotherapy, radiation treatments and two operations.

Urich earned his first television role in the 1973 comedy series "Bob & Carol &
Ted & Alice." He also appeared in the TV series "S.W.A.T" before being cast as
Peter Campbell in "Soap."

One of Urich's most recognizable roles came as private detective Dan Tanna in
"Vega$." He later starred in another detective series "Spenser: For Hire,"
which was based on Robert Parker's novels.

More recently, Urich appeared in "The Lazarus Man," and the brief NBC sitcom
"Emeril."

Born in Toronto, Ohio, Urich won a football scholarship at Florida State
University. He later earned a master's degree in broadcast research and
management from Michigan State University.

Urich briefly worked in Chicago as a radio sales agent and a television
meteorologist. Burt Reynolds helped Urich land his first major role,
co-starring as his younger brother in a stage production of "The Rainmaker."

Urich appeared in several television miniseries and cable specials. He won an
Emmy for his narration of the cable documentary "U-Boats: Terror on Our
Shores." He also won a Cable ACE award as host of the National Geographic
series "On Assignment."

Urich spent his latter years devoted to cancer research and education. He and
his wife, actress Heather Menzies, established the Heather and Robert Urich
Fund for Sarcoma Research at the University of Michigan to accelerate the pace
of research into sarcoma.

He is survived by his wife; three children, Allison, Ryan and Emily; two
brothers; a sister; and his mother.

This is very sad news. I didn't realize he was sick again. There was a time
in the late 70's where he seemed to be the busiest man in TV Land as he had a
regular role in so many different series.

I wonder what the record is for the most tv shows an actor has starred in (as a
regular cast member, not as a guest star)?

i remember seeing robert urich & his wife in a play at the kennedy center.
cheap tickets were sold for $5 to anyone with a military i.d. all others
paid $25. the play was the old ronald reagan classic: "the hasty heart" ...
wow! it was absolutely amazing! there wasn't a dry eye in the place when the
final curtain went down. it was awesome! and the best $5 investment i ever
made for entertainment.

Many of them were very short-lived. I used to watch "Vega$" a lot (I
loved how he could park his car inside his house) and "Spenser: For
Hire" (where he co-starred with Avery Brooks, who later played Captain
Sisko on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" -- there was always rumors of
Urich doing a guest spot on DS9, which would have really tickled all
the old S:FH fans (like me) but sadly it never came to pass).

Miss ya, Bob.

W. Bush lost the election by 500,000 votes and intimidated
the vote counters in Florida from counting the votes,
because it was obvious that Bush would've lost.

Very sad news. :( I was really surprised to hear it; I had no idea the cancer
came back, since he'd been so visible the last few years. I thought (and hoped)
he'd beaten it for good.
I remember seeing a number of interviews he gave during and after his prior
battle. He always seemed very personable, full of humor, a class act and a
genuinely nice guy. Once, on Oprah, he read a letter that had deeply touched
him from a young girl (also a cancer patient) and they had a lovely meeting on
the show.
Thanks for making the world just a little nicer place, Robert.

I didn't realize until today that he grew up in a "suburb" of

I was having a hard time seeing a Wagner resemblance, until you mentioned
Shatner.

While it was originally a line that Jimmy Carter said about Lester
Maddox, it is still far and away more original than anything you have
ever said. Witty in fact. Keep up the faith erik. You are half way to
being a wit.

You didn't miss anything, not a thing. And Urich
was a no-talent TV actor who somehow managed
to make a career out of playing himself. He proves
how brain-dead Americans really are, the proof
is 50 million people voted for a criminal who
lost the election, Coke W. Bush. May God have
mercy on America, home of the Atlanta Braves.

My reading, and comprehension of the English language are fine, thank
you. Though the same cannot be said of yours. In this case, both Cub
and Fan were used as adjectives to modify loser. Had he been referring
to a fan of the losing Cubs, he would have said either "fan of the
losing Cubs" or "losing Cubs fan".

Comments on the above from a Canadian.

1. Robert Urich was an extremely talented actor.
2. George Bush actually won the election legit, although I dont approve
of how he did it.
3. Given the events of 9/11, God did have mercy on America; he allowed
Bush to be elected instead of Gore.
4. ..and also home of the 2002 champions, the Seattle Mariners.

Some people MAY read the words LOSER CUB FAN as 3 adjectives describing
the writer/speaker/NetspeaKer. Of course punctuation may have helped,
especially for people such as loser loki.

The words of the net should be, but sadly are not, taken seriously,
however, seriously does not mean PERSONALLY.

Some of our posters are akin to kids yelling I have rights without
having a single clue what their rights are and the responsibilities,
obligations and requirements all these rights entail.

Then, of course, the legal trade realized what a GROWTH industry
children represented and the legal trade is LOSING their grip on
the sex trade.

Dam, this can not be an american yet he likes the most traveled franchise
in MLB.

I have Maddux (the Cal Ripken Jr. of the Nat. League*), Glavine,
Litgenberg & Smoltz on my fantasy league staff along with Schilling,
Lieber, Stottlemyre (stay healthy or I will get D. Holmes who is a free
agent), Daal (thank you Mr. 15 mill/season with a private plane Brown),
Reynolds & Robert I'm not sure I'm a person Person.

Of course I have only 8 regulars on offence. Oh well.

* not with regards to cons. games but as a person. After 15 years olde
Greg saw the DL for the 1st time, this season.

By the by - definition of incapable ---- Bobby Cox, he still does not
know how to handle pitching changes, he is INCAPABLE of getting it right
at the most important of times - never mind who is relieving whom.

10 flags & 1 WS. I believe I would have stroked a second one out of all
that talent. I would also consider shooting myself, in the foot, for all
the failures.

Somehow D. Moore would have LOVED B. Cox.

The Braves were my team growing up and I still like them but not as much
since Jane left the scene. Watching her sleeping like a baby, in the
stands, made me all warm and fuzzy.

Now if only the odd screeming liner had flew by her head; would she have
realized anything ?

As a canuck, living very very close to you, at least by your ISP address,
I NetspeaK that 2 out of 4 is only half right.

Which 2 do you think I believe to be correct ?

And considering that ottawa is where we live/are - who cares, eh ?
