CLAIRE HAGEN, RIP

WOODLAND HILLS, CA--Claire Hagen, wife and devoted partner of MYSTERY
SCIENCE THEATER 3000 favorite Ross Hagen for more than four decades,
succumbed to cancer here Dec. 3. Born Claire Lynne Poland, she was a model
and budding actress using the name Claire Polanski when Hagen met her in the
early 1960s. The two married in 1963. By the time she appeared in the movie
in episode 202- THE SIDEHACKERS (insisting on keeping a role that a young
actress named Goldie Hawn, who was an extra on the film, had wanted), she
had shortened it to Claire Polan, a stage name she used on and off for years
to come.

But it was as Claire Hagen that she did most of her work: in addition to
being life partners, Claire and Ross, as often as they could arrange it,
were work partners, with Claire serving as producer, director and a number
of other roles on many of Hagen's films.

In a 2000 interview, she said their marriage was a success, in part, because
the two made a point of "never taking anything for granted, ever. We respect
each other."

I never knew that Goldie Hawn was an extra in The Sidehackers; that was my
favorite MST3K episode. I'll have to pull out the video and see if I spot her.
