Lieutenant-Colonel Derek Cardiff, of the Scots Guards, of Playford
Hall, Ipswich, Suffolk, died 6 March, 2002, aged 90.

(Richard) Derek Cardiff was born in 1911, the son of Colonel Richard
Henry Wingfield Cardiff, of Easton Court, Ludlow, (of the LG family of
that name), and was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College.

His elder brother was Brigadier Ereld B.W. Cardiff, CB, CBE, also of
the Scots Guards, born in 1909.

Derek Cardiff was commissioned into the Scots Guards in 1930; Captain,
1940 (NWEF 1940); Major, 1942; Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the 1st
Battalion the Scots Guards, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 1944;
&c.

Cardiff married firstly, 23 October, 1942, (divorced 1963), the Hon
Stella Maria Glyn Winn, former wife of Charles Vivian Jackson, and
eldest daughter of the 5th Baron Newborough, and his first wife Vera.
He married secondly, 1963, Eleanor Mary, former wife of Capt the Hon
Arthur Cameron Corbett (later the 3rd Baron Rowallan), and daughter of
Capt George Frederic Boyle, (1893-1929), kinsman of the Earl of
Glasgow.

Arthur Corbett, his second wife's former husband went on to contract a
sensational and highly publicised marriage in 1963 (annulled 1970)
with the mannequin April Ashley, who had been born a man named George,
and who had undergone a sex-change operation.

He leaves a widow, and a son from his second marriage, David Richard
George, born in 1964, and step-children, Johnnie, Sarah, Anne and Ros.

The funeral service takes place on Friday 15 March, 2002, at 12 noon,
at the Church of St Mary Magdalen, Little Hereford.
