I'm very sad to report that Amzie Strickland (Mayberry's Miss Rosemary
and four other characters) passed away from complications of
Alzheimer's on July 5 in Spokane, Wash. She was 87. She was an
incredibly talented and gracious person whose amazing career included
650 TV guest-starring roles, 24 films, 3,000 radio shows, and countless
commercials.
The family has not designated a charity for memorials, but they have
said that Amzie always liked the idea of supporting local programs for
the arts. TAGSRWC will be making a donation in her memory to the Surry
Arts Council and to Spokane's CenterStage, a non-profit theater that
Amzie founded and for which her son, Tim, serves as artistic director.
We'll have a more complete recap of Amzie's wonferful life and career
in The eBullet later this month. For now, we just wanted to let her
Mayberry friends and fans know the news.

Interesting collection of photos showing many character actors in
their later years on that page.
What a great bunch of photos. I wish I had been autograph hunting at that
convention.
Thanks for the pointer. That's an incredible collection of pics.
I was sure I remembered her as a "Bob Newhart Show" regular too, but apparently
she played the "stage" version of Mrs Bakerman in the play Howard Hesseman's
character wrote based on the therapy group....r

She was on an episode of "The Golden Girls" where an unliked neighbor
passes away, and she arrives to give a nice eulogy. Turns out she's in
the wrong funeral, and when she finds out who's funeral she's really at,
kicks the casket. Kills me every time. Usually she played a sweet old
lady but I recall her being a racist jerk in some episode in the 80s,
but I can't remember what show it was on.
I've seen in her as a guest star on dozens of shows. I had no idea
she was 87, she has looked to be in her 60s for about 30 years.
Stacia
Wonder what year that was, Brittany Morgan and Julie Newmar sure dont look
50 something and 70something.
Amzie also played the Don Loper Salon saleslady who shows Lucille Ball
the gowns in the ILL ep called "The Fashion Show."
Lot of bad toupees and facelifts...but it did bring back a ton of
memories. Thanks.
This is weird. On Tuesday night I was watching a Twilight Zone
marathon and she was in the episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple
Street". I looked up IMDb and was glad to she was still with
us.........

The last two things I recognized her in were commercials. She played a
grandmother in Pop Secret Homestyle microwave popcorn ads a few years ago,
and more recently she played an elderly customer in some national fast food
chain ad (McD's? BK? ... can't be sure.)
Here's a pic of Amzie from farther back, which may make her a little
more recognizable. This is from a sitcom called "Carter Country,"
which ran from 1977-79. She played the sheriff's mother. (The sheriff
was played by Victor French. The pic shows the two of them.)
