The cast of Hill Street Blues has not fared to well. I guess they didn't
listen well to Esterhaus' "Be careful Out There" plea. Several of the stars
and minor characters have passed on including:

Michael Conrad (192-1983), Kiel Martin (1944-1990), Rene Enriquez (1933-1990),
Trinidad Silva (1950-1988), Dolph Sweet (1920-1985), Jason Bernard (1938-1996),
and Charles Hallahan (1943-1997).

I inadvertently had Pat Corley also listed as dead, but just discovered the
error. I guess I was miixed up because they killed off his character on "Murph
Brown".

Of all the Martians, Dean had to be my favorite.

Charles Hallahan was in John Carpenter's "The THing", one of the best movies
of all time, and he was also in "Dante's Peak".

Actually, regrettably, he died of AIDS. I would never, never , NEVER
say this if it wasn't confirmed at the time of his death. He was an
intravenous drug user and contracted it from a needle. Many of his
closest friends confirmed this at the time of his untimely death.
This wasn't a National Enquirer "I Want to Know" special. Why do I
remember this? Because at the time of his death, Steven Bochco gave a
poignant interview stating that Martin became a dear friend of his
during the long run of Hill Street Blues. during this run, Martin was
battling drug addiction. If you remember , his character battled
alcohol addction on the show. This wasn't an accident. Bochco
watched Martin struggle and tried to help. Martin was never able to
beat it. Remember "LA Law?" The divorce lawyer character eventually
played by Corbin Bernsen was specifically written by Bochco for
Martin. Bochco said he wanted to keep an eye on him and also because
stories of Martin'ss addiction had circulated around Hollywood, Bochco
wanted to assure Martin of work. Alas, Martin became ill with AIDS
before LA Law went into production and Bernsen was chosen at the last
minute as a replacement. I don't know why this story has always
stayed in my memory. I have never battled an addiction and I have
never had a close friend who has either. I know I'm lucky. I think I
always remembered it because I was touched by Bochco's friendship and
how terrible a toll alcohol/drug addiction and AIDS takes on those
around the victim. So very sad.

******THAT would make Martin the 2nd actor on HSB to die of AIDS, since Rene
Enriquez also died of it a few years ago.
