St. Louis comedian Rodney Winfield dies

Rodney Winfield, a St. Louis-born comedian, died February 9, 2009, at a
hospital in St. Louis, Mossouri. The cause of death was not released. He was
69.
Mr. Winfield graduated from Sumner High School and joined the Navy, serving
in Japan, according to Ronald L. Jones Funeral Chapel. He moved to Los
Angeles and began doing stand-up in clubs there.
Mr. Winfield was friends with comedians that included fellow St. Louisan
Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor. He opened for Pryor, The Temptations and the
O'Jays.
Mr. Winfield had roles in several movies, including "Dead Presidents,"
"Bebe's Kids" and "Talkin' Dirty After Dark." He also appeared on
television's "Def Comedy Jam" and "Soul Train" and frequently appeared at
comedy clubs.
Mr. Winfield returned to St. Louis in 1992 and performed locally when his
health allowed.
Among the survivors are a son, Aaron Simms of St. Louis; and a
granddaughter.
