Lawrence A. Finfer Interior Department Official
Lawrence A. Finfer, 61, who was acting director of the Office of Policy
Analysis at the Interior Department, died March 30, 2009, at home in
Washington. He had stage four melanoma.
Dr. Finfer moved to Washington in 1978 and began working with the Interior
Department as a historian for the old Heritage Conservation and Recreation
Service. He then became a program analyst in the office of the secretary
before joining the Bureau of Land Management in 1998 as the assistant
director for communications.
Lawrence Alan Finfer was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He received a bachelor's
degree in American history from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in
1969 and a doctorate in social and intellectual American history from
Michigan State University in 1974.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Judy Jashinsky of Washington; his
mother, Jean Miller of Boston; and a brother.
