Cheryl "Rainbeaux" Smith -- actress, musician and artist
Born June 6, 1955
Died October 25, 2002
Memorial Service scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at the Little Chapel of
Flowers, Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, CA, with interment to follow.
Cheryl Smith was born on June 6, 1955, in Los Angeles. Her mother was also an
entertainer and, following the divorce of her parents when she was 7 or 8, she
moved with her Mom to an apartment in Hollywood, just south of Sunset Boulevard
and east of La Brea. As such, she literally grew up as a child of the Sunset
Strip. She hung out at the famed music clubs of the era, playing drums with
several groups and noted performers, including Joan Jett. In fact, her stage
name -- Rainbeaux -- was derived from (and reportedly given to her by the staff
at) the famous Rainbow Room because of her constant presence there. Through
contacts made at the club, she made the jump from the Sunset scene into films,
appearing in her first movie in 1971 when she was just 15. She went on to
appear in more than 30 movies, most of which are listed below, attaining cult
stardom for her camp portrayals in several cheerleader, horror and
women-in-prison films. (She was also a talented artist and painter, later
earning money while in prison by designing elaborate tattoos for fellow
inmates.) Her relationship with a well-known musician (reportedly a member of
Eric Burden & the Animals) led to the birth of a son, Justin, in early 1976 --
as well as a severe heroin addiction, which she battled for the remainder of
her life. Her drug problems eventually ended her career, left her literally
living on the streets near LA's famed MacArthur Park, prompted two prison terms
and resulted in the development of hepatitis, complications of which led to her
death on October 25, 2002. Her films included:

Was she the one who snorted the cleanser off the paper plate, thinking it was
cocaine?

Take Wilshire east ... When you can hear the empty crack
vials being ground up under your tires ... When you can
see the streets littered with thousands of dirty syringes ...
Hookers servicing the LAPD behind every other shrub...
Winos so thick, they are stacked on top of each other ...
When you can see ducks on a garbage covered lake ... with
a look in their eyes that seems to plead ... "Please, just kill
me." When the sound of gunfire is so loud ... you'll swear
your in a free-fire zone ... You will know you have reached
MacArthur Park ...
It's lovely.
Even shorter directions: Go to Bill's neighborhood. *still waving - Hi

Thanks for the link, Ed. It's not as big as I thought it'd be.
They usually keep those post cards pretty small in size Kathi. The mail
carriers can deliver them easier that way.
j/k, I know what you meant. I thought the same thing actually, almost not
worth singing about from the way it appears.

There is also a macarthur park in Little Rock, Arkansas, where Gen.
Douglas Macarthur was born.
What was it called before he was born there? (I assume it kept its original
name for some time after, actually, as MacArthur didn't begin his rise to
prominence until after he helped burn out the Bonus Army alongside
Eisenhower and Patton).

The State too often is like a driver who hits a pedestrian, gets out of
his car and says to the victim, "It's lucky for you I was here to help."

And for those of you who have lived in or near L.A., this little
tidbit tells you most of what you need to know about her life.
Scary.

Heh .. heh ... Are you kidding? The Rainbow Room was a
blast ... Although ... it probably wasn't conducive to
maintaining a healthy body ... and mind ...

It was the Little Rock Arsenal, a U.S. Army post. Macarthur was an
army brat. IIRC, His father, a captain, was commandant of the arsenal
when Douglas was born in 1880. Captain Macarthur was re-assigned six
months after Douglas was born. The arsenal was closed and deeded to
the city of Little Rock in 1892, and was called Arsenal Park until
1942 when the name was changed.
I said it was scary. I didn't say it wasn't fun.
