She was the former Kathleen Elsie Barry, younger daughter of Arthur
Barry, and was born at Montreal, 26 June, 1912.
Her first marriage was to Arthur Richie Tillotson.
In 1948, she married as her second husband (and his second wife), the
then Victor Frederick William Cavendish-Bentinck (known by his last
Christian name), who played a central role in the intelligence war
against Nazi Germany.
Cavendish-Bentinck's first marriage had been to an American, Clothilde
Bruce Quigley, who bore him a son who predeceased him, and a daughter.
Immediately after the war William Cavendish-Bentinck was sent to
Warsaw as British Ambassador to Poland, but his troubled private life,
and divorce, and then his marriage to Kathleen Tillotson, caused a
rift with the Foreign Office.
The FO and the Treasury seized the excuse of the divorce to dismiss
him without a pension (his biographer Patrick Howarth, ascribes this
to the _class hatred_ of the Labour party, then in power).
In 1977 Kathleen's brother-in-law inherited the dukedom of Portland
(but none of the vast family fortune that had been enjoyed by previous
dukes), and she and her husband became Lord and Lady William Bentinck.
Her brother-in-law's death, in Nairobi, 13 December, 1980, made
William and Kathleen Duke and Duchess of Portland, Marquess and
Marchioness of Titchfield, Earl and Countess of Portland, Viscount and
Viscountess Woodstock, and Baron and Baroness Cirencester.
The 9th Duke died 30 July, 1990, aged 93, when the dukedom became
extinct, but the earldom and lesser honours devolved upon a distant
relative.
The Duchess is survived by a step-daughter, Lady Mary Jane Graubard.
The funeral service takes place at Chelsea Old Church, 22 January,
2004.

On Paul Theroff's Online Gotha I found her married since 1963 to an
Alexander Georgiadis, without date of birth or death. No second
husband is listed. Does anyone know more about the marriages of Lady
Mary Jane?

The Count of Bentinck. By the way, does the present earl of Portland and
count of Bentinck use the former title?
Pierre
Netty, Debrett states: Lady Mary Jane m 1st 1963 (m diss 1978)
Alexander Constantine Georgiades, of Pilton, Oundle, Northamptonshire;
2ndly, 1978, Prof Stephen Ritchards Graubard, and has issue living (by
1st m) William James, b. 1967, - David Constantine, b. 1969.
Thanks very much. Unfortunately the Dutch nobility books don't go any
further than the living Dutch branches of the Bentinck family (not
many alive anymore in the mediatized branche), and the British part is
far from complete in my genealogy. Debrett's is not available here in
the library. There used to be quite some information on the website of
Tim Bentinck, the present Earl of Portland - by the way is it right
there was one count more than dukes? I have Tim listed as the 12th
Earl, following his father in 1997, while this father inherited the
titles from the 9th Duke in 1990 (I have his date of death listed as
July 31 by the way, not July 30). Unfortunately the 12th Earl didn't
have the information on his website anymore the last time I watched.
If anyone is able to answer some the following questions for me I'd be
very happy.
Is anyone able to add something to the following dates of death?

One Earl before the Dukes,so the 9th Duke was 10th Earl,
his successors have been 11th and 12th Earls.
Succession as the Count Bentinck is a little murkier to me,
it was resigned to a younger branch and then apparently
resumed by the senior when the younger died out?
: If anyone is able to answer some the following questions for me I'd be

He was of course never so titled, would only have been "Lord" if
he had survived until his father became Duke.(Of course, when the
8th Duke succeeded his brother became "Lord" as if their father
(1856-1948) had become Duke, though never in his life was his
succession remotely likely.

The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again,
at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.

This lady, who inherited the vast estates and works of art of the
Dukes of Portland, is alive and well. Her nephew, Mr Parente, is her
designated heir.
