Scott was one of 10 children born to John and Ruby (Riehm) Cary. He was born
April 11, 1923 in Kendallville, Ind.
On Jan. 19, 1946, he married Mary Hurley in Sturgis, and together they
raised six children on a farm in East Gilead. This past January, they
celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Cary was a very gifted baseball player who played in the minor leagues
for many years until his skill and love of baseball gave him the opportunity
to play for the Washington Senators. After his baseball career, he returned
home to Michigan, where he farmed and began the Cary Farms Trucking
business. During that time, he also drove truck for Essex Wire for many
years.
Scott was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Major League Baseball Alumni
Association, and he had formerly served on the Bronson School Board of
Education.
He was inducted into the Ft. Wayne Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977.
He was a dedicated baseball coach for Bronson Little League and the Babe
Ruth Baseball programs, and one of the coaches for the infamous Honey Lake
Baseball Team of Bronson.
Scott was honored to be asked to participate in the Major League Baseball
Golfing Benefits, which he did for two years. He enjoyed playing golf and
bowling but nothing could ever compare to his love of baseball. Spring and
summer were Scott's favorite time of year because it was then that he could
be watching his children and grandchildren play the game that brought so
much joy to his life. He was extremely proud of the family that he and Mary
raised together.
Mr. Cary is survived by his wife Mary; sons J. Russell Cary, Dick
(Christine) Cary and Bill Cary (Rhonda Stookey), all of Bronson; daughters
Connie (Roger) Carper of Sturgis, and Cindy (Bill) MacDaniels and Deb (Carl)
Rifenburgh, all of Bronson; brothers Jim (Vivian) Cary and John (Eleanor)
Cary, all of Burr Oak; sister Myra Mayer of Bronson; grandchildren Ron,
Bret, Tim, Theresa, Billy, Jennifer, Betsy, Lori, Corey, Jamie, Scott,
Emileah, Meghan and Lauren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; brothers Howard, Harold and
Phillip Cary; and sisters Julia Mayer, Margie Cossairt and Mary Nelson.
