Yes. According to my DH, automatic handguns do exist but they are
impractical as you'd empty the magazine in less than a second. And
you'd do it with not much accuracy because the recoil of firing on
full auto causes the gun to creep upward and to the left. You'll be
aiming at the sky in short order.
Range officers can tell you all sorts of stories of people who smack
themselves on the head/forehead due to the recoil of shooting a weapon
on full auto mode.
