Ferriday's first black mayor dies
8/13/2006, 2:20 p.m. CT
The Associated Press

FERRIDAY, La. (AP) - Sammy Davis Jr., this town's first black mayor
and longtime educator, has died. He was 75.

He died on Friday after fighting a number of health problems for
several years, his daughter-in-law, Debra Davis, said.

"He was a family man, a community leader, former president of the local
NAACP," Debra Davis said. "He was an all around leader."

Davis was elected mayor in 1984 and served one term. He also served on
the Town Council and police jury. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in
the state House of Representatives. He also was a teacher and principal
in Ferriday.

"Sammy Davis to me was a mentor, a civil rights activist and an
educator," Alderman Johnnie Brown said. "He was always concerned about
the children and the elderly."

"We would talk from time to time about issues," Brown said. "A lot of
my directness comes from him. He was truly a person that stood up and
stood out for the benefit of all."

Ferriday is best probably known as the hometown of Jerry Lee Lewis.

An obituary for Sammy Davis, Jr., with a quote from Johnny Brown. Who
wrote this Dick Martin or Gary Owens?

I evacuated to Ferriday for two weeks after Katrina. I wouldn't wish
Ferriday on my worst enemy. The convenience store sold knives, rifles and
shotguns.

Was his nickname "The Candy Man" ??

And two of his cousins ... Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart.

Thanks for posting this. He was my grandfather, and truly a pioneer and a great man. He did a lot for people of color in that area.
