Initial Reports Indicate Victim At Fault
LOUISVILLE -- Heather French Henry, former Miss America and wife
of Lt. Governor Steve Henry, struck and killed a bicyclist
Sunday evening, according to police.

Henry was turning from Lexington Road onto Grinstead Drive at
about 6:30 p.m. when she struck a 43-year- old woman, WLKY
NewsChannel 32 reported.

The woman was taken to University Hospital, where she was later
pronounced dead. Her name was not released.

According to NewsChannel 32, investigators do not suspect French
was at fault.

A police spokeswoman said the bicyclist was crossing against a
traffic light and was not in a crosswalk when she was struck,
NewsChannel 32 reported.

Henry, who was driving a Lincoln Navigator, told investigators
that the sun was in her eyes at the time of the accident,
NewsChannel 32 reported.

Additional information is forthcoming.

So, she had to be turning left with a left turn arrow. Otherwise there would
be no way that French could have hit someone going against a traffic light.

Is Kentucky different than other states? I thought that bicycles were
vehicles and had to stay out of crosswalks, which are reserved for
pedestrians. Bicycles are supposed to be on the road, driving in the same
direction as traffic.

So she had to be travelling approximately westbound?

So Wiz, are you familiar with this intersection? Is there a left turn arrow?
Would someone turning from Lexington Road onto Grinstead Drive at 6:30 p.m.
have the sun in their eyes?

***No--just a green light. French was traveling west. The bicyclist was
traveling south. The bicyclist ran her red light.

But French was turning. There had to be more than "the bicyclist was going
against the light." The bicyclist may have also been on the wrong side of
the road, but it was just said that the bicyclist was outside the crosswalk,
which makes no sense.

If French was travelling west, then she was turning either north or south.
If she was turning north, then the bicyclist would have had to have been on
the wrong side of the road to get hit, not just outside a crosswalk. If
French was turning south, then perhaps the bicyclist was in her path and
actually in the intersection when she was hit. It still seems that it would
have had to have been a left turn by French for this to happen.

The whole news story doesn't make much sense and seems very incomplete. No
surprise there, I guess.

Upon receiving news that Paul Sauberer had made the remarks
below, and after consultations with my Joint Chiefs of Staff,
being briefed by members of my Cabinet and telephone
conversations with various world leaders, I have come to the
following conclusions:

Oh yes, Paul, I'm very familiar with that intersection. Mrs.
French-Henry would have most definitely had the sun in her eyes
while traveling on Lexington road, which runs east to west,
before she had made the turn, which I, like you, am assuming to
be a left turn. Like many states, right turns in Kentucky are
legal at a red light, as long as nothing is coming from the left
or from the front turning to your right. The bicyclist was
crossing against the light, and out of the crosswalk when she
was struck. The woman, who was from Germany, and recently
relocated to Louisville, apparently was at fault, since she
crossed on her own, and not with the traffic. Here is a link to
a map of the area, which at anytime of the day or evening is
very busy, it's on the east side of town, along with links
having updated stories on the accident, with a video report on
one of them if you choose to view it:

***I don't quite understand your confusion. French was traveling west and
turned south on the green. The cyclist was traveling south, ran her red light,
but was not in the crosswalk where she should have been if she were traveling
with pedestrian traffic. It's pretty simple.

Is Heather French the Miss America who claimed her gimp leg
miraculously grew to normal size during a prayer service? Or was that
some other dingbat?

So did the bicycle messenger that slammed into the passenger side of my car a
couple of months ago. Good thing he wasn't going a little faster - I could
have run him over.
