J.D. Cannon, actor with guest roles on numerous TV shows, dies at 83

HUDSON, N.Y. -- J.D. Cannon, an actor who appeared in guest roles on
television shows such as "Law & Order" and "Murder, She Wrote," has died. He
was 83.
Cannon died May 20 at his upstate New York home 30 miles south of Albany.
He also had a regular role as a New York detective chief on the series
"McCloud," a police drama that ran on NBC from 1970-77.
From 1960 to 1991, Cannon had 85 guest roles on television. The shows
included "Remington Steele," "The Fall Guy," "B.J. and the Bear,"
"Gunsmoke," "Bonanza," "The Mod Squad," "The Fugitive," "The Defenders" and
"The Untouchables."
His final on-screen role was in a March 1991 episode of "Law & Order."
Cannon had a few big-screen roles, including one in 1967's "Cool Hand Luke,"
a prison drama featuring Paul Newman and George Kennedy.
A native of Salmon, Idaho, Cannon graduated from the American Academy of
Dramatic Arts. He served in the Army during World War II.
Cannon is survived by his wife and two brothers. Burial will be in Cedar
Park Cemetery in Hudson.

According to the photos, he was "chief" on "McCloud". He was on
everything, one of the character actors I always liked and who was
everywhere in the 70s and 80s.

I remember that, in the '70s, McDonald's had a commercial with Cannon
to counter the rumor that McDonald's was using worm meat as fillers in
the hamburgers because of beef shortages. Cannon showed slabs of
good-looking beef to the camera and pretty much said, "See? Ours." He
brought great authority to it.
Okay. NOW that I have seen a definitive obit, I can include J.D. Cannon
on my list. Since his death wasnt reported until after June 1st he wouldnt
have been on my June update anyway, but thats a minor point.

Up until "McCloud," Cannon may have been best known as the witness who
cleared Richard Kimble of his wife's murder in the final two episodes
of "The Fugitive."

This was apparently a very disguise-dependent episode ... Diane
Baker and John Milford are barely recognizable.
