One of my dearest friends, actress Anne Haney, died today of an apparent
heart attack at 67. She was a nearly ubiquitous character actor in the past
decade, probably best known for her prominent roles as Mrs. Sellner in MRS.
DOUBTFIRE and as Mrs. Chapil in THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT.

Anne was an extraordinary actress. She played the lead in my play VERDIGRIS
in L.A. in 1985, a production that led to my own writing and acting career
and to a great deal of acclaim for her. The only person who ever struck me
as similar to Anne in type and style is Frances Sternhagen, and as brilliant
as Sternhagen is, I think Anne was the better actress. Over the years we
were involved in a number of stage productions together, and she was simply
exquisite, with an emotional range that constantly surprised those of us who
worked with her.

This is quite a blow, on a personal level. And quite a loss to the
profession.

RIP, Annie.

I remember her fondly, and for some reason the role that springs to mind
was that of the neighbor of Debbie Reynolds' character in "Mother". A
wonderful actress ... my condolences on the loss of a friend, Jim.

Anne Haney was indeed one of the best character players we had in contemporary
films, and her loss will certainly be felt. She had the ability to bolster a
scene (or an entire film) with her presence.

Special condolences to Jim Beaver in that she was a personal friend of his.

RIP

Oh, Jim.....how sad for you and for the Arts community as well. I remember
Miss Haney as Kevin Spacey's mother in "Midnight In The Garden of Good and
Evil", as well as in "Mrs. Doubtfire". I have seen her in many things without
knowing her name.

My deepest sorrow for your loss.

Although she may have been friends with Dick Sargent, I don't know, I
suspect you're thinking of Robert Reed (The Brady Bunch). Anne and Reed
were indeed very close friends. As a matter of fact, she brought him to see
my play (the one I mentioned that she starred in) and he tried to option it
for a film. She was interviewed fairly recently on some show about The
Brady Bunch, about her friendship with Reed.

When Robert Reed passed away, we were doing an extensive tribute to him in
The TV Collector magazine. I was told that Anne Haney was a close friend of
his. I sought her out for her memories of him, anxious to get some funny or
touching anecdotes from someone who knew him well, who could balance the
negativity about his behavior on "The Brady Bunch" set and show him in the
human light of friendship. She turned down our interview request, I'm sure
because she had no idea that we were different from the regular press and
weren't out to scandalize Reed. I pressed her agent a second and third time,
gave them actors' names who would serve as references, and assured them of
our intent, but Anne wouldn't give in.
It was a personal blow to me because I was a great fan of Anne's by that
time (having noticed her as a recurring character on-- which was it-- "Our
House" or "Life Goes On"?) and had made a point of discerning her name
because I so appreciated her unique and distinctive presence in any kind of
scene she was in. There had been times when I walked by the living room,
heard a voice on the TV and said, "Sounds like Anne Haney's on... Must be a
good show."
When I learned that she was a friend of Reed's, I was so much looking
forward to talking with her, seeing what she was really like, and branching
out into an interview about her entire career.
It's ironic for me to read here today that she was also close friends with
Dick Sargent, because I had a few personal conversations with him very close
to the end of his life. He had been writing a book about what it was like to
be gay in Hollywood, how he'd had to hide it for so long in the earlier
years.
I'm sorry for your loss, Jim. And for the loss to the profession and
audiences.

I first became aware of Ms. Haney when she played no-nonsense judges on two
completely different TV shows: "Northern Exposure" and "Star Trek: Deep
Space Nine." After that, it seemed as though she popped up everywhere.

Even though her roles were usually small, she always stood out as memorable
while other minor characters immediately faded away. What a loss.

I remember how beautifully Ms. Haney spoke about her friend Robert Reed. I
thought at the time how lucky he was to have such a loving friend. After
reading Mr. Beaver's account of his friend I had that same feeling all over

What a wonderful lady. My wife and I were watching the old mini-series
"Celebrity" -- and boy why don't they make entertaining stuff like that
anymore? -- and she had a great little part as a crusty newspaper reporter
named Millie. She was priceless.

She was one of those great character actresses (like the superb Thelma Ritter)
who was always good no matter the quality of the material. RIP.

An error in my posting of Anne Haney's death. She died Saturday, May 26,
not the 27th. My apologies.

Jim:

I met, quite by chance, Anne Haney in Los Angeles in 1992 at a
restaurant and when I went over to her table, excused myself for
interrupting, and said that I thought that she was one of the "best
faces" in TV and movies she blushed, leaned over, gave me a kiss on the
cheek and said, "that's so sweet".

She was...a classy broad!

In all the best terms that that moniker can bring.

She was also one of my favourite judges on various TV law series.

Bye Anne...a lot more people that Jim will miss you, maybe just not as
deeply.

Courage brother...

I find it ironic that Anne Haney, who played the President's Secretary,
Mrs. Chapel in "The American President" which starred Martin Sheen has
died about one week after the other fictional President's Secretary,
Mrs. Landingham in "The West Wing", also starring Martin Sheen, is
killed in a car crash.

The real irony here is that "The American President" didn't STAR Martin Sheen.
It STARRED Michael Douglas and Annette Bening. Sheen was a minor character.

She was also rather broad-minded to allow you to interrupt her meal like
that.

Not if you watch "The West Wing" in New Zealand. We're still waiting for

Mr. Granger is on permanent roam in the Washington, D.C. area. One or both
local PBS stations have run AYBS in a continuous loop for at least 15 years.

Dear Mr. Beaver, and fellow readers,
It was through a forward of Mr. Beaver's eulogy that I learned of
the passing of actress Ann Haney. To fans of the TV Western, "The
Magnificent Seven," she is remembered - and now mourned - as Nettie Wells,
the fiesty, Spencer rifle-weilding aunt of young Casey Wells, in the episode
"The Collector."
Of all the guest characters who appeared on Mag Seven, "Nettie
Wells" certainly ranks among the most beloved. She was the hardy pioneer
woman, the tough but caring maternal-figure, and has reappeared in countless
fan fiction stories as the no-nonsense yet compassionate "den mother" to
seven rough and rowdy boys.
What truly speaks for Ann Haney's ability as an actress, is when we
are reminded that she only appeared in a single episode of Mag 7, yet her
presence continues to resonate. Her career spanned over twenty years and
countless roles, and she will be missed. "The Master is come and calleth
for thee..." May peace be to her spirit.

Respectfully,
G. M. Atwater

I'm not sure why, either. The Los Angeles Times had a nice paid obit with a
picture and a good precis of her career on this past Thursday, but no news
story.

Considering how many interesting little parts she had in so many films it's
really inexcusable that she didn't get an obit in the NYT.

The piece in the L.A. Times was a paid obituary, in the funeral listings.
It was not a news article and therefore not searchable on the Times's
website. I can't understand why a news obit has not appeared, but one
hasn't. Nor has anything appeared in Variety.

A private funeral is being held this week. A public memorial service will
be held June 16 at Theatre West in Los Angeles.

Why such a long delay for the private funeral?

I can't understand why nothing has been reported about her death. I even
sent an email to ETonline as she was definitely a character actress of
note. I've seen them report the death of far lesser known
actors/actresses. I guess they didn't want to do it unless they could
say "ET is first to report.....

I can only speculate. To the best of my knowledge, none of Anne's family
lived here, so travel may have been at issue.

As the son of a minister, I'd attended hundreds of funerals before I was
even out of high school, and I grew up in the very strong tradition of a
funeral two, or at most three, days after a death. But I think longer
delays are increasingly common, especially with the increase in cremation,
and it's been many years since I've been to a funeral that occurred within
three days of a death. Especially here in Southern Cal.

I'm in Ottawa, Canada. Most of the funerals I attend these days..and
sadly there have been quite a few this past year...have been within
three days. That is the tradition I also grew up with. Some recent
funerals I know of are even happening within two days. The longest span
in my own experience is six days and that was related to relatives
travelling long distances.

My father in law's funeral was 4 days after his death to accommodate his sister
who lived in Florida. They had originally planned for the funeral to be held 5
days after Ed died.

On another note, there was no mention of Anne's death in TV Guide again this
week, but they're not known for getting the tributes in, in a timely manner.

I just loved her acting. It's such a shame there has been no notice of it.

Anne Haney's death has finally been noticed by Variety, which posted a

Character actors tend to get short shrift when it comes to obituaries,
especially ones that mention credits. It *is* incredible though that
the L. A. Times didn't report her death as a straight obituary rather
than a paid one.

I grew up in the Los Angeles area and was used to TV news coverage of
the death of actors. Natalie Wood died shortly after I left California
for Missouri and I was shocked that she was barely mentioned on the
local news here (it took awhile to realize that in Los Angeles, actors
*are* local news).

"Liar, Liar" is a funny movie but she added that extra "touch".

My condolences, Mr. Beaver, late though they are, on the passing of
your friend, Anne Haney.

When I grew up in post-war (II) Santa Monica & Malibu, almost all
'industry' news was reported. That's because the area's two major
employers were 'show business' and the emerging aerospace industry.
Nearly all our neighbours, family friends and classmates' families were
involved in either one or the other (or both). So it wasn't unusual to
see news stories about make-up artists, costume designers, cameramen,
set designers, dolly operators, character actors (like Warren Chase) -
not just the stars.

Nor was it unusual to hear rumours about stories that were repressed
because of studio or political pressures. One I particularly remember
involved the (now dead) son of a moderately well known actor (also
deceased) who was connected with the Hearst/Davis family. He was one of
the people who started surfing after the Gidget movie, and although he
was never very good at it, he was very aggressive and sometimes violent.
He and one of his cronies lured some old guy into a public toilet one
day on the pretext of having sex and almost beat him to death. A little
fun on a dull day. A small mention of the arrest appeared in our local
evening paper and that was the last the public heard about it. All it
took was a couple phone calls from on high to stop the story dead. Not
that the Herald Examiner would have touched it anyway. Bob

I hope this shameful incident happened before M.D.'s death in 1961.

No NoSpamSam ... I was referring to the late son of 'San SimEon's
Child'.

Unfortunately, the incident did occur before MD's death and at a time
when she was quite ill.

According to my step-dad (who knew everyone involved except the
unfortunate victim), it was partly out of respect for her condition and
partly out of fear of reprisals that the media dropped this particular
potato. Bob

PS - Your assessment of APL (or "junior") is spot on. He was almost as
nasty a piece of work as the psychopath who was arrested with him (and
who eventually served time in a State prison for another assault).
